Church secretaries

Where do church secretaries fit in? Are they considered to be a ministry? Full-time or not? Employees? Just checking. Thanks.

Anything that goes towards running the church has a place to do His will and purpose in the world. Without the support of admin staff, the more 'public' figures of the church ie; the pastors are able to better 'minister' full time as it were. From receptionists, to secretaries, to ushers, to toilet cleaners... though they may not be 'glamorous' or exciting positings as it were compared to worship leading or platform ministry, all are important in the eyes of God.

You have to at least like the place you're at a little if you're going to work there. So, if you're not a church person, why would you want to work at a church?

I think it's a great ministry, whether you spend a couple hours there working...or you're there all the time!

Hi, I'm new here. I have been a church secretary for 5 years. Sometimes being on the inside of the church can be disconcerting. You have struggles there just like anywhere. I have been encouraged, discouraged, mad, sad and joyful. It really is like a family. But I find that the unique struggles you face working for the church make it hard to talk to people about it. You don't want to damage the reputation of the pastors or hurt the church, but sometimes everything is not just rosey either.

If the church secretary is not perceived of as part of the church's ministry staff, somethig is very wrong! He/she will speak to more people, see more people and often have a greater impact on some people than any of the pastors or other members of the team. Church secretaries often have the more contact with non-members and members of the community than anyone else on staff. Any church that thinks that all the church secretary does is type and file and answer the phone is short sighted.
