  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just turned on my chrome box today. If I understand correctly, chrome OS must print through a google server? In other words, the "cloud ready" printer must connect across the internet to a google server where the print queue dwells?

I don't like that very much, because I bought the chrome box to have better security. Who knows what sort of wimpy OS might run on these "cloud ready" printers. It seems that somebody might be able to masquerade as a google server and connect to my local "cloud printer" to install a virus to snoop around behind the firewall?

Is there no way to print directly from the chrome OS to a local printer without exposing the printer to the internet?

Sadly, your easiest options are Cloud Ready printers.
If you want to use a non-Cloud Ready printer you’ll need to connect the printer through the internet through a laptop or PC and register with Google Could Print using Google Chrome.

Thanks. Do you happen to know the protocol between the printer and the queue? I watched a set-up video for HP e-print (which is their version of the cloud printing). It appears to use email addresses. This makes me wonder if the printer might periodically connect to an email server using POP or something? It seems there might be an annoying delay between printing and the paper coming out of the printer or there might be a lot of unnecessary traffic generated by the printer? I guess I will find out after I set it up.
