There are interesting references in the Bible to Christ's new name when he returns in the second coming.

"Him that overcometh... I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name." -Revelation 3:12

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." - Revelation 2:17

Also Isaiah refers to a new name for the second coming:

"And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name." - Isaiah 62:2

These definitions below might bring more depth to the term "name" --they give me the impression it is more about reputation in others' minds.

An example -- from being scorned and denied a homeland, to building up a homeland. From people saying, 'where is your God when you need Him," to outsiders also seeing Him. Others' perception changes.

A name is an identification label -- not needed by oneself, but by others referring to you.

shêm (Isaiah)

Brown-Driver-Brigg's Definition

  1. name
    1. name
    2. reputation, fame, glory
    3. the Name (as designation of God)
    4. memorial, monument

Strong's Definition

  1. A primitive word (perhaps rather from H7760 through the idea of definite and conspicuous position; compare H8064); an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character: - + base, [in-] fame [-ous], name (-d), renown, report.

Gk. ὄνομα ónoma (Revelation)

Thayer's Definition

  1. name: univ. of proper names
  2. the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.
  3. persons reckoned up by name
  4. the cause or reason named: on this account, because he suffers as a Christian, for this reason
Strong's Definition

From a presumed derivative of the base of G1097 (compare G3685); a «name» (literally or figuratively), (authority, character): - called, (+ sur-) name (-d).

Think how many people got new names in the Bible: Abraham, Sarah, Jacob. More I am sure.

In Judaism, when a person converts to the faith, they get a new name. Usually it is 'so-and-so son of Abraham our father.'

A new name connotes a new life.

Well, Isaiah did say his name would be Immanuel, and they ended up naming him Jesus. So there is precedence.

"Immanuel" - God with us. Jesus certainly fit that description.

But Frenchy you are completely right, an overly literal interpretation of Prophecy will make us miss out on God when He comes to see us and asks us to follow Him.
