Christopher Reeve on Religion

"Abe Lincoln put it very simply in 1860: 'When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion.'"

and
1996 speaking at the Courage Center

Q: Do you believe in the Lord?
A: Even though I don't personally believe in the Lord, I try to behave as though He was watching.

and Larry King Interview

KING: A lot of questions are coming in about faith, and the last time you were with us, I asked this, if you prayed and you said you thought that would be hypocritical; you didn't pray before this, why pray now? Has -- have you gotten any feelings of faith or God through all of this? Lot of people asking that.

REEVE: Well, believe it or not, I think that, y'know, God is not an entity that you find when you go to church and pray to God almighty, you know, and I always remembered that going to church as a kid, you know, and they talk about the vengeance of His terrible swift sword and His army, I said, "well that's kind of a scary guy." But I think that -- while I don't believe in God, per se, I believe in spirituality. And I believe that spirituality actually is automatically within ourselves, but we have to learn how to access it, and what that is, is realizing there is a higher power; there is...

KING: So it's not atheism?

REEVE: ... more than just us, there is an inner strength, there is something, y'know, that comes from -- I don't know where exactly it comes from, but it's -- it really is the best that humans can be and perhaps what it is -- perhaps really what it is love.

also

Reeve "I thought it was the job of the government to do the greatest good for the greatest number."

The above show that He did not Beleve in Jesus Christ as His savour.

Now maby it changed in the last few months, and we can only pray that it did, but according to his own words, he did not beleve in God, or Jesus as his savour, so for this I do morn. He was a man that tried to fight the fight with his own streingth, not relying on others.

and what's wrong with embronic stem cell research, I mean in the case where groups buy embryos that are going to be thrown away.
The main problem is that our coulture has gotten to the point where it is ok to throwaway the Children.

Abortion is wrong in 100% of the cases. The can work with the cloned cells that they have now, but dont kill babies (Or justify it) just to get new cell cultures.

Aw - goodbye, Superman! You'll be missed. :sigh:

His last few years of LIFE, & NOT this stupid embryonic stem cell issue, should be the HOPE and INSPIRATION to those who shared his physical predicament. I pray that Kerry has enough sense to not use his death as part of his campaign (like he did in the 2nd debate by dropping his name). Give me a break - most of Americans see right through that & are disgusted by it.

I had not heard that he wasn't a Christian?? However, we never know what happens between man and God when we are on our death beds. :) Even if it's at the last minute, He will still accept you with open arms. (He would just rather you did it sooner, so you have time to feel His love & see His vision while still on earth).

Christopher Reeve had love in his heart & a wonderful family. He inspired others to keep trying & have hope, instead of feeling sorry for yourself. If you are 100% physically cured of a predicament or disease, yet have no lessons of love inside of you, you are still broken.

I wouldn't call research that might lead to saving lives "stupid". Do you think Reeves thought of it as stupid? Let's just do the research and find out for sure, without any religious idealogolies. It's what humans can do for fellow humans. Let's just find out, if we are wrong then we can move on and find a better way.:)

Considering that he was a quadraplegic confined to a wheelchair, and on a breathing machine -- I'm frankly amazed that he was able to believe in anything at all.

And what does being a quadriplegic on a breathing machine have anything to do with a person's beliefs?

Society has a strange way of looking at life. Rather than it's sanctity, in which even Reeves attacked for pushing for embryonic stem-cell research over the more stable and more usable bone marrow, placenta, and umbilical cord stem cells, people all too often look to it's quality. As if life isn't worth living if one has a severe injury or chronic illness.

Hence the often said: "Well I wouldn't want to live that way!" Without considering there are those of us who have no choice but to live with our medical conditions. As if faith and belief rests solely on how one feels or how physically active or independent they are.

Many people who are disabled would disagree with you on your comments

If he was still into Eastern Mysticism and the like...no way he was not. And many of those who are into Eastern Mysticism like to call themselves Christians.

...and what's wrong with embronic stem cell research...

Other than the fact it destroys an innocent human life to save another. Even though this manner is both unethical and ignores the more stable and more promising aspects of stem-cell research?

Reeve's was an atheist if i'm not mistaken, but who gives a flying &$%^!! He was and will always be part of American culture in a sense. His memory will always be with me like so many others that have been part of my life.:)
As an athiest, you should accept that Reeve is dead, and you will die to and so will those that remember him. America will not last forever. Quit living in a world of delusion.

What in the world are you talking about about? Are you baiting or flaming me? If so, you are breaking the rules. Either get to your point or move on. This thread is for our appreciation of Reeves' life.

No, I am just showing the inconsistancy between your statement and your claim of athiesm. I put the tounge smiley in for fun. Sorry, I did not mean to offend.

Certainly Christopher Reeve was a very nice and gentle person. We should all certainly remember him in prayer. If you don't pray, that's dandy, and your good thoughts will be appreciated. But those of you who do pray, you can stop picking fights in this thread and pray for his soul. And the non-prayers should stop squabbling over stem research....go somewhere else for that.

/mod hat off.

A great voice for the advocacy of research for spinal cord injury has been silenced. While he never was able to fulfill his dream of walking again, his unbroken spirit that he would someday succeed is an inspiration to all of us.

I would have to disagree that Reeve's soul can be prayed for (some would counter it could). From a Biblical standpoint, if he still professed the Eastern Mystical teachings the matter of his fate as one who rejected Jesus Christ, there's only one outcome. Fame, popularity, stardom and all these things the world considers important matters little in God's eyes.

What can and should be done is pray for his wife and family. While nothing can be done for Christopher Reeves now...the Lord may yet somehow reach his family with the hope found only in Jesus Christ.
