  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Atheists will be glad to have the day off though, won't they?

Not to mention having a Christmas tree, lights, getting & giving presents, singing Christmas carols, and maybe even hearing "Merry Christmas!"

Aren't you glad to have non-religious holidays?

I will assume here you know christmas trees have a pagan origin. And while I agree most atheists will enjoy a lot of what you say they would, it is highly unlikely atheists (and many theists alike) will sing christmas carols, they are very annoying.

Nope ... which came first? Christmas trees or pagans?

In this order: 1) pagans, 2) christmas trees (originally ornamented evergreen trees to commemorate the winter solstice, often worshiped), 3) Christ, 4) Christmas (which happens to coincide with the winter solstice and the tree thing).

God has a way of "hijacking" things, eclipsing them with His holy presence and sending them into near obscurity.

Yeah, and Christmas trees are not among one of those things... What is next? Are you going to say that Santa Claus is real and related to Jesus too?

I don't understand your line of thought. Jesus came before Santa Claus, who vowed to be "like the most High."

I mean exactly what I said, that ornamenting trees during the winter solstice is a costume with pagan origin. Christians adopted the holiday, not the tree. There is no mention of a "Christmas tree" in the Bible.

My thought is that Santa Claus is as much a "Christian" symbol as the tree is. In other words, both are associated with Christmas but neither are Biblical.

I agree with you.

But I also think God put up with that for so long, then eclipsed it big-time with the first Noel.

Now we ornament trees with Christian interpretations.
Christians adopted the holiday, not the tree.
The tree was hijacked ... (rescued, actually).
There is no mention of a "Christmas tree" in the Bible.
Is "Christmas" mentioned in the Bible? is "Rapture" mentioned in the Bible? is "Trinity" mentioned in the Bible?
My thought is that Santa Claus is as much a "Christian" symbol as the tree is.
I don't doubt that one bit.
In other words, both are associated with Christmas but neither are Biblical.
Says you.

Is AV now really referring to himself as "God"?
Is that what you think? would I do something like that, in your opinion?

And why are you asking someone else for their opinion, rather than asking me?

The scientific method can take a hike sometimes, can't it? ;)

Ah, if only he could do that with other religions, then all those non-believers would turn out as Christians and have their souls saved! Or does God not care about, for instance, Africa or India?
