  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Christmas secular?

For me the holiday Christmas has been so blurred by the media, it has become secular, and still celibrate it because it is a family tradition.

Anyone else feel the same?
Is there anything wrong with celebrating it as a family tradition? I believe most people have always done this.

Christmas has been mostly a secular holiday in my immediate family for years. The only thing religious about our christmas celebration is the two nativity scenes my mom puts up. One is purely for decoration, the other is because it's one her grandmother made.

Even in my extended family, the religious meaning behind Christmas is minimal. The only thing they really do that makes it religious is go to Christmas eve mass. After that, it's just about getting together with the rest of the family.

Although Christmas is still a religious celebration for us, it is only slightly so. Easter is a much more religious holiday in our book.

It does not help that it's roots are pagan as Pinp points out and that it is nowhere near the actual time of year Jesus was born (Aug/Sep based on most anlyses I have seen).

With my husbands family, (my sister-in-law being Jewish, my mother-in-law being pretty much Buddhist, my father-in-law not really having much of a religion besides Elvis) its kinda interesting...

There's usually so many holiday celebrations going on you don't even notice.....

But I would say (personally) Christmas is kinda secular around there. But its usually a good time to spend together.

Christmas has never been religious in my house. In my opinion, once you have the christmas tree, the decorations, the presents, the christmas dinner and everything else, it kind of obscures any religious meaning there was supposed to be.

The yearly hype about these few days is indeed overly secular (it's just the same with Ostara - Easter - if you ask me). Of course that doesn't mean that everone must go with the flow.

Me, I refuse to go along either with the "buy, BUY, BUY!!!" craze or with the christian celebrations. The only thing still unclear currently is whether this year's Yuletide celebration will take at my place, my wife's place or that of the free shaman in our circle of friends. ;)
