Christians hoping for global disaster?

In talking with my fellow Christians, I notice a disturbing trend. Many seem to be hoping for global disaster to occur soon so they can be raptured. Am I misunderstanding something? Am I wrong to be deeply disturbed by this kind of thinking?

I don't think it's wrong. And you're certainly not alone. I have family who are praying fervently for a nuclear confrontation with North Korea and China because they're certain they will be vacuumed into heaven once the bombs drop. Don't ask them if they're concerned at all about what happens to other people, though. They're thrilled they'll get to "watch all you sinners burn while we enjoy our reward".

We... don't speak often anymore.

No, you aren't wrong, and if for no other reason, they aren't going anywhere until the time comes.

I am deeply disturbed by this sort of thinking as well. Those who think and behave in this manner are doing a spiritual disservice not only to themselves but to Christianity itself. I believe it to be intellectually, emotionally and spiritually unhealthy to live your life in constant expectation of the "end times". It is far better to live your life in such a way as to make this a better world, not just today but into the far distant future.

For several years I have heard fellow Christians hoping for a global disaster so they can proclaim the gospel and save people during the great trib they expect to happen during the disaster and using the tragedy as a way to preach the gospel to the unsaved - even though they are not using their time now to do that very thing ,

Hi J316,

I would not be party to any faith that encourages the end to come. It will come when God is ready for it to come. As far as whether or not some war or skirmish between the U.S. and N. Korea will be the precursor of the last day's events...well, that's all just guess work. There have been lots of bad wars. I doubt seriously that any conflict between the U.S. and N. Korea would turn nuclear, but it could. Personally, I wouldn't feel obligated to such thinking as these that you are referring to.

According to my reading of the Scriptures, there won't be any major catastrophe that starts the last days. First must come the lawless one.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

I haven't run into any such people, though I guess I don't run into that many people. I don't think the Lord is influenced by such people, is he?

It is far better to want God to pick us to be this person:

Ezekiel 22:30 And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.

There are many other examples of intercession in the Bible. In Genesis 18:16-38, Abraham was not wanting God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, but rather he pleaded with God to spare them. In Exodus 32:32, Moses said to blot him out of the book that God has written if he will not forgive their sins. In Daniel 9, he confessed the sins of the people including himself among them. The Lord's prayer instructs us to pray for God to forgive the sins of others. Even Christ's last words on the cross were a prayer of intercession to forgive the sins of others for they knew not what they were doing.

I would say to them redirect and hope for the destruction of Satan's mystical kingdom of him and his angels - not for disaster and destruction or troubles for human beings.

20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Satan is directly responsible for all the deaths on planet earth and all of the suffering and all of the heartache since the creation of the earth. He knew what he was doing when he got Adam and Eve to sin. I can hardly wait until God destroys him.

We shouldn't just hope for a global disaster, we should know it's coming from the many prophesies about the forthcoming Day of the Lord's wrath; the Sixth Seal.
There has to be some kind of dramatic event so as to make the nations give up their sovereignty to a One World Government. Jesus said the world will again be as in the days of Noah, that is; living normally as we think, but without any national acknowledgement of our Creator. God will correct this situation, by again using His creation to reset civilization. This allows people to still deny the existence of a Creator God and winnows out the true believers, His faithful Christian people, to whom He promises amazing blessings.
