It was the people who saw them acting like Jesus that called the followers of Christ Christians.

More likely it was because they kept talking about "Christ". The Antiochian pagans (or possibly Jews) who gave them the name would have no idea how Jesus acted to compare them to. They may have observed them behaving oddly, but the association with a leader would have to come from what they said.

People began following Jesus as a teacher. They called him Rabbi.

Joh 3:2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."

After so many miracles and other things that drew people, the populace treated Him as a leader. He entered Jerusalem on a young donkey, and people hailed Him as a political dignitary.

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Following shifted from listening to wise words and fishing for men, to what people wanted it to be. The political and religious leaders termed people as Christ-followers for different reasons than the earnest disciples did.

From what I have learned that is how the name christian came about. It was used in a derogatory manner to identify all those weird Jesus freaks.

And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

if christians are those who believe jesus died for them (as this is how much of evangelical christiany defines real christians), what were those believers called who died between the period of the incarnation and jesus' death?

simply put they are under the law but we were made free form the law because being crusified with jesus broke the bondage of the law... essentially the promises of abraham r ours but instead of the law we now have the spirit... the jews got the promises of abraham befor the law nd now the law has been fullfilled nd the promises of abraham are availible to all who die to themselves and thier flesh and r reborn in christ and the holy spirit is then givin to us... its jsut fundimental doctrin so i c no point to argue hope it helps buddy nd god bless
