  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yikes! I never thought I'd say this, but I seriously think I might be OCD! I heard something said by Dr. Phil and I decided to look up the subject to get more information. So much of it reminded me of myself, including this:

"Observe the person’s sense of morality and ethics. An individual with OCPD is excessively concerned about morals, ethics and what is right and wrong. S/he is excessively concerned about doing the “right thing” and has very rigid definitions of what that means, with no room for relativity or mistakes. S/he is constantly worried about any rules he might have broken or which he might have to break. S/he is usually extremely deferential to authority and will comply with all rules and regulations, no matter how insignificant they may seem.[5]
  • People with OCPD extend their concepts of morality and values to others. It is unlikely for a person with OCPD to accept that another person, for example from a different culture, could have a sense of morality if it is different from their own.
  • People with OCPD are often harsh on themselves as well as others. They may see even minor mistakes and infractions as moral failures. “Extenuating circumstances” do not exist for people with OCPD."

Only in a time and society such as this could a...."Dr Phil" exist much less succeed.

It was only a comment from him that made me do some research. The quote I did in the OP was from what I had found as a result.

The only way to know for sure is to be tested.
Too many people say they have this or that mental illness and it is not fair to us who have it and been clinically diagnosed.

You may have some symptoms but that is far from claiming a mental
Illness.

That's why no one believes people with real mental illness.

It is very frustrating for those of us who need help but are not believed.

Actually, I've been diagnosed already, although not with OCPD specifically. So I know what it's like. My diagnosis was having Schizotypal disorder and depression. I even spent some time away from home against my will for "treatment" when I was in my teens.

I would not let Dr. Phil tell you that your morals are OCD. I do not have OCD (although I have the impulses sometimes) and I am very careful to think about the moral implications of everything I do. Non believers will always tell us that we are too strict. Don't let the world try to compromise your morals. Do remember, however, that we are to also have compassion.

S/he is excessively concerned about doing the “right thing” and has very rigid definitions of what that means, with no room for relativity or mistakes.

For me, this sentence is key. Relativity. Context. Consideration. Flexibility. And what is "excessive" or "rigid"? These are terms which can change quickly according to the circumstances.

Step back from the religious aspect for a moment. Are you showing signs of OCD in other tasks?

Also, bringing religion back into it - are there Biblical promises that faithful and well-studied Christians have given you that you continually do not believe?

Good question, although discussing personal medical issues on the world wide web could become a bit tricky.

Yes. I see signs of it in many other things. Mostly, it's about doing things a certain way or obsessing endlessly in trying to make the right decision about something.

Also, bringing religion back into it - are there Biblical promises that faithful and well-studied Christians have given you that you continually do not believe?

Not that I'm aware of.

I might have asked already, but have you been officially diagnosed? That would be step 1, so you can stop wondering.

I think the problem is, even for someone diagnosed with OCD is seeing things as black and white necessarily OCD?

Have you tried taking a personality test?

You may be an introvert... that personality comes with inherent "perfectionism," advocacy, and worry, it seems.

Well, the problem with this theory is I'm an introvert with all the symptoms described, but I also have OCD tendancies. I had to rid myself as a packrat at an early age and I still find it hard not to try avoiding stepping on a line.

It could be introversion, it could be OCD, but I don't find it something I suffer from, I consider it a healthy attitude which I believe comes from my spirituality, not my mentality and I quite enjoy it.

Rereading the OP I see I don't have the symptom of not being empathic to other's mentalities.

Yes, and I'm definately an introvert. Reading the results of the test was quite an eye opener and answered so many questions I had about myself.

Yep. Noticed this thread a mile away cuz it is similar to me.

Took a prof. personality test.

Took it five more times on five separate occasions to try to throw the test, or gauge deviations. Came up with same results.

Read the insight on my personality type... eye opening. It helped me tremendously.

The best personality test by far is Myers-Briggs. Corporations and company's even use it. There is a lot of information on the web also once you find out your type. I am an INFJ

First letter, Introvert or Extrovert
Second letter, Intuition or Sensing

and so on below:
  • extraversion (E), sensing (S), thinking (T), judgment (J)
  • introversion (I), intuition (N), feeling (F), perception (P)
Myers–Briggs Type Indicator - Wikipedia

It's actually the best out there.

I would be INFJ introversion (I), intuition (N), feeling (F), judgment (J)

That's the one I took (several times.)

I am INFJ also.

Do you know that we are the lowest percentage of the population of all 16 types?

Do you often feel like people do not understand you or think like you? Just curious.

I've had some really good documentation on our type, I'll see if I can find it and see how close to you you think it is.
