• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello,

I consider myself a christian. However, within the last year I've found myself believing the bible less and less untill now I don't belive it at all. I don't have a problem with this aside from the fact that I feel very alienated. Both from Christians and non-Christians alike.

I am not holy enough for christians and am considered a heretic by some. Yet, I have a belief in Christ that seperates me from non-christians.

So, I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this or something similar or if anyone can offer any insight.

thanks

Hello Erik3

From what you said, it sounds like you have been hurt by Christians and unfortunately, that's not uncommon.

What you need to remember is that even though a person is a Christian that does not mean that they have allowed God to manifest His perfected love in them. Some Christians can become very self-righteous, putting others down, which gives the impression that living a pure live for God is unattainable. That is not true. Everyday we need to strive to be more like Christ, trusting the guidance of His Holy Spirit and His Word.

The thought that comes to mind is that you are not believing God's word to be true because when you look around at the Christians you know and see, they are either not treating you with God've love or you are seeing a lot of the hypocrisy in the church.

You can not allow the faults of man to turn you away from believing God's word.

I understand that you feel alienated but you're not. God is with you every step of the way.

I'm curious as to why some say you are heretic?

Wow, that's a really tough situation to be in.

A site that really helps my faith (I just recently came back to the Lord after 7 years away from Him) is called Precious Testimonies. Just google those two words, and click the first site that you see. Reading about how people who were totally against God becoming christians is very powerful. There are so many testimonies on it.

Also, I urge you to meet face to face with a minister or a strong christian.

The fact is, without Jesus and faith in him, our natural state is eternal condemnation. I do believe there is a hell, and we must avoid it at all costs.

I hope the best for you my friend.

Don't worry, Erik.

There is no obligation in Scripture to believe every word of Scripture in order to be a Christian. Neither is there such an obligation in the Nicene Creed.

What is useful to remember is that Christianity is not a destination but a journey. As part of that journey we each of us find different stages; some of belief and some of unbelief.

What God is often teaching us is not to hold onto props of any kind, and to rely on him. This may be what he is teaching you, or it may be something completely different.

You say that you do not believe any of the Bible. I suspect that if you look, you will find that there are some parts you still believe in. The Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitutes. The naming of God as Love, Mercy and Compassion.

Rest assured you are not alone, and there are plenty of other Christians in this world who are comfortable with exploring every aspect of their faith, in the knowledge that they do so with Christ beside them all the way. Wander over to the Liberal section to find others who have been on - and remain on - pilgrimages like your own.

My quick thought would be to focus on the person of Jesus himself and on relating to him as a friend. The Bible can be confusing and Christians are very imperfect, as are non-Christians.

I would say at this point to "Fix Your Eyes on Jesus" and put this other stuff on the back burner for awhile.

He's the perfect friend; get alone and talk to him as much as you can.

Thanks to everyone for respondng I appreciate all the advice.

DIVA, some say heretic because I do not believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible.

onlythingavailable, I should have been more clear, I don't believe in a literal interpetation of the Bible. I've reached this conclusion after researching church history and the Bible's history, and in my opinion how inaccurate or maybe subjective the translators are translating the ancient languages, but I'm no expert just my opinion of what I can understand.

Catherineanne, You are correct, I do still belive in the Sermon on the Mount, Beatitutes, ect. Thank You for your insight, maybe I will check out the liberal section.

This isn't an easy subject, so I'll only post my opinion. I believe the Bible is trustworthy because I believe God looks out for it. The Bible is special and has a purpose, and He wouldn't let it be defiled. There might have been people involved in translating and so on, but that doesn't mean God hasn't been involved.

Of course, considering the hundreds of different translations that are available today, I understand your confusion. I still believe God has it in His hands, though.

Yes, I have gone through that. Some things in the Bible just don't make any sense.

Hey, I totally understand where you are comming from. I have both athiest friends and christian friends. I have declared myself an Athiest and a Christian before finally reaching a conclusion that I am Agnostic. Although I am Christian now, my theories are also different from what the bible says. In my oppinion the bible gives us clues on how to live our life. I don't believe that everything in the bible is true. I do believe there were people who are in the bible in real life at some point, but this is a very old book that has been translated many times and into many languages. So it is hard to differentiate what is the truth and what is just a tale.

I suggest that you follow your own belief system and accept what others have to say about religion (and atheism) as their own oppinions.
