• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good Christian therapists that specialize in treating scrupulosity? I understand this is hard to find, and therapy is so difficult for this demographic. I think I may need treatment, no longer is it just blasphemous intrusive thoughts I'm having which I know is OCD/scrupulosity; but at times I am having trouble figuring out what is OCD and what is me. I want to be treated by a Christian therapist that takes the Scriptures seriously; but one who understands and can treat scrupulosity.

I've looked but haven't found anyone yet.

Thanks much.

Hi Flower,
If you can't find a Christian psycholgist who treats OCD using ERP then you should go ahead and work with one who isn't a Christian. My therapist wasn't a Christian either but it wasn't detrimental to my recovery to see her. The only thing that was a problem was that she wasn't "in the know" about ERP so some of the behavioral therapy she recommended made me worse. This was just asking me to write logical counterstatements to the obsessions. That's not a good idea for OCD. Other things she did for me were very helpful. I think the OCD makes us scared that seeing a nonChristian therapist might make us worse. But all OCD themes are treated in the same manner. What you don't want is to go to someone who is just a Christian "counselor" who is clueless about OCD. They may try to treat the OCD as a spiritual problem and spend a great deal of time trying to reassure you through the scriptures. Although this is certainly a well intended thing it would immediately show that they don't understand the disorder. Reassuring someone with OCD is always counterproductive because it validates the obsessions. Try to keep that in mind.
I'll pray for you that God would direct you to a good Dr.

I wasnt looking for a christian theripist when I went to seek help but the therapist I got just happened to be a Christian. So that really made it more comforting and a lot better because he also understood why this affected me so badly. You should just call around, I dont know if you should ask every therapist if their a Christian but you might just end up with one :)
