hey, not sure how this christian forum thing works, but here goes :

So I got saved earlier this year and I used to listen to a lot of somber progressive metal and rock. Ive searched for replacements but there are a long list of bands to go through. Was wondering if anyone knew of any Christian bands sounding like the following :

*Opeth
*Porcupine Tree
*Orphaned Land
*Nightwish
*Enslaved
*Symphony X
*Devin Townsend
*Dream Theatre (they sometimes have Christian themes, and the bassist is Christian.)

anything that fuses jazz with progressive metal? Like creative sounding metal bands with haunting melodies, great vocals, good progressive drumming? Also symphonic metal?

I will also go out on a limb here and say that some (if not most) of those bands can still be a part of a Christian life. For what it's worth, Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater have been favorites of mine for many years (as a Christian). I've seen both in concert multiple times. I'm also a fan of Opeth, but approach their music more cautiously. Some I really like, and some I avoid.

Orphaned Land is also great, and much of their music is rooted in Old Testament scripture. Devin Townsend is a mixed bag for me, but I LOVE Synchestra. Same with Nightwish's Once.

Christian prog metal is out there, but I haven't found a lot that really grabs me. Amaseffer is another Israeli band with Old Testament roots like Orphaned Land. Speaking of Orphan, there's a band called Orphan Project that put out a few Christian Prog Metal albums. I'm only familiar with Spooning Out the Sea (2009), but it's pretty good.

HB sounds like Nightwish and Myrath sounds like symphony X. Try those out.

At Vance
Redemption
Ride The Sky
Pain of Salvation
Vanden Plas
7 Days
Sacrecy

are also awesome Christian Progressive metal bands.
