The level of determination St. Anthony showed is astonishing. Those ancients seemed hardier than people today.
Oh sure. Ascetics are a very special group of people that can't be compared to the average Joe Blow believer but they give us examples of how to live a sanctified live. We still have them today but they're few and far between and you don't hear much of them because they live in seclusion.

How do you do it? Meditating on scriptures? Memorise a verse or a few to think about? Read a piece over and over? Pray about a verse? What does christian meditation involve and what helps you get the most out of it?
So, I have actually been learning to pray the Rosary. As a devotion, one meditates on an event in the life of Christ and / or Mary in sequence on every ten "Hail Mary"s prayed, which begins to look and feel a bit like a living Bible in one's mind. Each five decades encompasses a series of major events or mysteries; Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious, and as one goes decade by decade, one prays out the life of Christ and is given an opportunity to see and consider what one is contemplating.

I don't know exactly what I'm doing, but I'm trying, and God is merciful, and kind.

Dear ones, Psalm 119 has 176 verses. This psalm is all about the word of God and how powerful it is om ur lives. It is divided into 8 verses each of 22 sections. My suggestion to you will be to memorize this psalm. This is absolutely possible. I have done it and my is doing it. Take one section of 8 verses at a time and do it in a version/translation that you like and understand becuase later on you will meditate these. Each moring get up early if you can and spend 30-60 minutes memorizing and solidifying it. There are many methods to memorize. Here is one link that helped me. Hi; my wife and I are reading through this Psalm at the moment; we are doing it in sections.

In the light of Psalm 119, I was thinking about Jewish versus dispensationalist perspectives on how the law is identified with being 'under the law', or denoting the Word of God that the believer's feeds on, including the fullness of revelation in Christ with the New Testament's perspectives also. (Big question...)

Yes, I am glad you brought it up... The word of God is Jesus Christ for us who believe in the Messiah for our redemption. 119 psalm is inspired so we can relate it to the new testament exhortations for Christians to obey in gratitude for the forgiveness of our sins through the Lamb of God.

In John 15 Jesus mentions that the need to obey his commands in order to abide. That obedience to his command will enable us to be fruitfulness and which in turn brings glory to the Father.
