The Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware, The Cambridge History of Christianity vol. 1 through 8, and The Lost History of Christianity by Philip Jenkins.

I don't know how advanced your reading is, but the "Lion Handbooks" are a good primer. You might find the "The Lion Handbook - The History of Christianity" to be useful, along with a couple of their other texts.

For the Catholic Church this one might be worth reading.
