What are some common sayings in Christian circles that are misconceptions when aligned with what The Bible really says about a topic? Here's one that I've been thinking about lately. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Name some that come to your mind too.

You've heard people talk about the love of God and how noone can fathom it. Well.. check out what Ephesians 3:16-19 says.

That's in the middle prayer for spiritual strength, it's not saying that we can understand the love of God, it's saying that our spiritual strength comes through the spirit and love of Christ. Paul's asking that the Ephesians, and well all Christians, recognize this.

That God will not give you more than you can handle. that's actually not a biblical concept. there is a verse that's close (can't think of it immediately), but it never says He won't give you more than you can handle. I think just about every story in the bible i about people facing circumstances they could never handle, but with God they overcame. I've been through things in my life, even recently that I couldn't handle, but God gets me through every time.

"Modesty" means dressing in a way that doesn't incite interest in one's physique.

...Except that even when the word "modest" was translated into English for the KJV, it didn't mean that. It referred to ostentatious dress style. It had to do with flashing bling, not flashing skin. Taken as a whole, the Bible seems to be WAY more concerned with the sin of mammonism than with sexual lust, but for some reason, when modern Christians say "sin" they almost always mean something having to do with sex.

"Where two or three are gathered, I am with them."

This passage is in response to church discipline. That's it, that's all. It has nothing to do with anything else. Despite that, I hear it used all the time, especially in the context of prayer and worship. Apparently, the Spirit of the Lord is only present when there are a group of people gather. Praying on your own? Tough luck, kid!

Because remember: God may be omnipresent, but he's more omnipresent in some places than in others.

And you could probably add to the list: Basically anything having to do with hell.

But of COURSE Jesus and the prophets were talking about literal fire and worms in hell when they mentioned the physical garbage dump of Gehenna! And what else would the devil look like but a figure from Greek mythology who wasn't even all that evil?

Or the vast majority of things that come out of the mouths of dispensationalists regarding the end times or modern state of Israel. There's maybe 1-2% actual Scriptural content in there, and the rest of it is fanciful nonsense, bad theology, and eisegesis whipped up in a blender and served with pompous, legalistic arrogance to stoke completely unfounded fears and paranoia. If we compare the results of this to Galatians 5, it doesn't look too good.

is this coming from someone who thinks it's theologically wrong to listen to musical instruments during a church service?

I've actually heard dispensationalists say that Galatians 5 is only supposed to apply during the "Millennium". Also the Sermon on the Mount.

I don't think it's theologically to have instruments in worship, I personally prefer a Capella worship because that's a tradition, yes it did start out of bad theology, but we all pretty much recognize this and choose to keep our tradition
