  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Christian Developers?

I was recently at Microsoft DevDays conference which is a full day meeting for developers using Microsoft .NET technologies. The little town I live in is "tech-less" and so I do not have other developers to associate with unless online. Was nice to talk with the other developers as we all had something in common.

On the way home (had to drive 300 miles for the meeting), I was thinking about the meeting. It was nice to chat with others about the new technologies. But it got me thinking of how nice it would be to chat with other developers that happen to be Christians in addition to being software developers, that way we do not just have our technology in common but we are also family ;)

So, finally to the question, does anyone know of a site that has an area for Christian software developers to fellowship and enjoy the technology along with sharing about job openings and projects? Would be great to have other Chrisitians to network with and maybe actually maybe work on some projects together or just share knowledge and pray for each other.

Any ideas?

Haven't seen anything specific to the issue. I have toyed with the question of whether or not you could identify the religion of the designer of a program by evaluating it. I'm told that Orson Scott Card has been approached by people who identified his religion based on his science fiction writing...

Sorry, I don't know of such a site. And I've only dabbled in VB.Net. I'm only replying because I'm a Christian, an East Coast programmer (have never been to any of those MS functions) and would (like yourself) enjoy chatting with other Christian developers.

That'd be , but I don't know of any ATM.

Hey, are you by any chance the same Rocky Moore that's on CP? :)

I looked at your homepage, and I answered my own question: Yes! Well, it's a small world, and the internet makes it smaller. :D

Welcome to CF, Rocky!

Hey, cool, there are some coders here!

jdunlap, it is a small world, why didn't you tell me about this place eariler :)

Do not feel alone, I thought that forum (christianforum.com/f279]) was for web developers only also.

Jdunlap I know you are working on the Fluid GUI, what other projects you got going? Where are you working at?

Myself, I currently working for myself as a consultant and in my spare time (or during times of no contracts ;) ) I am building HintsAndTips.com site along with a couple others that have been on the drawing board for quite some time. That may be one of my problems as I spend too much time on this and not enough with God ;)

I have marked ChristianCoders.com to check into a little later this week. It seemed interesting also.

Yep I'm here as well. Although obviously not quite (ok nearly) talented as some of the others here, I'm still always interested in development. I have a small forum going on that perhaps we could mold to our needs if anyone would like to. I think it could be a wonderful extension of the community here for us to get something like that together in all honesty. Who knows who we could witness to as well?

Would be interesting. Simple networking of Christian developers is basically what I am reseaching. A place were we can share to help each other, for job postings we know about, trade horror stores of bugs we deal with, just general stuff. I also quickly browsed ChristianCoders.com. Just looking for fellowship :)

There is one project I would like to get together sometime this year or early next year. For the last year or so, I have been thinking of a site that would give developers, marketer, investors, etc, the ability to link together on projects forming a type of coop for a single project. I invision something that will allow them to earn from its proceeds providing them residual income. I see the site as a way for the different groups of people to come together from all over the globe to build products and services.

Would be nice to get a group of .NET/C# developers together and build something like that. I hope to have time to put into it myself this fall.

Another thing that would be nice, is to build a resource of developers that you can contract with for jobs you cannot handle yourself. If things go good for me over the next few months, I might need to contract small .NET/C# projects and would be nice to work with Christians. I beleive in taking care of the family first ;)

(Sorry for the slow post, I get a little packed up with life and coding and can take me a bit to reply :) )

Or I have an idea, not to sound like a wheasle...instead of just being around Christians all the time, actually witness while coding??? I mean...duh..
I was reading through this thread, thinking basically the same thing.

It seems Christians talk so much about how we are supposed to be a light to a lost world, yet it seems at the same time, most Christians I know are trying to figure out new and improved ways to keep themselves isolated from the rest of the world.

That's one of the things I like about this board. Christian and non-Christian alike are welcome. Most so-called Christian boards are run by people who make a full-time commitment out of trying to "keep the world out".

With that mind set why do you even go to Church? Should you not just go out and spend the time with the world instead? Do you not need Christian fellowship?

You seem to be missing the point entirely. You might want to try reading the post I made over again. It is fellowship.. It is the ability to be a Christian Geek with others that are like minded. It is the ability to work on a project and pray together on how to design it, on how to work through the problems.

This board also has Christian only sections ;)

The church should be about taken care of their own first. Churches should be praying for the businesses and workers in their assembly, teaching the businesses how to be an employer and workers how to work as unto the Lord. When jobs open they should be available, they should look to their assembly first. I once worked for a Christian employer and it was great. We shared the things we needed to pray for and I would walk through the building at night praying for the workers and the employer along with his family.

This is a lot like many Christian musicians. They are so focused on reaching the lost, they live on the edge, making there music so close to the world that you can hardly notice the difference. They should spend their time encouraging and upllifting the Christians and let them reach the world.

Anyway, this is what I am looking for, people that want Geek fellowship. If you want both and have people always slamming your faith or battling your doctine, there are places for coders on the net that you can do that. I am just looking for the ones I do not have to put up with that kind of garbage.

As for being around non-Christian developers (or a mix that is), I already do on CodeProject.com. That is enough of a global mix for me.

Once upon a time when I felt threatened by people "of the world", pretty much all I did was hang around other Christians.

I guess I'll counter your question about Christian fellowship with this one: If you're so in need of Christian fellowship, why not just start a commune?

And Christians wonder why the world sees them as a group of elitists.

On a secular forum, how do they even know you're a Christian unless you make it a point to throw it in their face? If you didn't make such a flaming big deal out of making sure you let every other coder on the net know that you're a Christian and how they're going to burn if they don't turn, you wouldn't be slammed and have battles over your doctine.

Since you don't like the persecution that comes with condemning the rest of the world to hell, why don't you look at the people around you, including fellow coders, as fellow humans, instead of heathens? They are humans you know? Most of them are pretty nice folks. They may not take being beaten over the head with a Bible too well, but if you're nice to them they're usually nice to you. And you might even have a chance to get to know a few well enough and gain enough respect from some of them to be able to share your faith one on one, and they'd probably even listen to you at that point...

I'm on several secular forums, and generally find them more friendly than most Christian ones. I've never been persecuted on a secular forum over over sharing my views or beliefs, unless you think someone disagreeing with you is the same as persecution...

In any case, do what you want. I'm not here to talk you out of it or start a debate, just wanted to make a point.

You seem to still miss the point entirely. This is just the kinds of things I wish to avoid. You might have abundant time on your hands, but I have a very busy life and do not have the time to waste. I am looking for people that are like minded that we can work and share together without wasting our time always trying to explain what other people do not understand.

Topic ended for me.
