The meaning of the word Character is Greek word for ‘representation’ In Heb: 1:3 and means “who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” It means to us to display Christ character and become conformed to His image – to literally to become an exact engraved copy of Him. It is God’s will that we grow up to reach such maturity in Him

No human being is born already grown-up. Similarly when we are born again we enter the family of God, as babies. We all go through the various stages of growing up – there is no such thing as instant maturity of Christian character. Growing up takes time. To be baptized and spirit filled is not maturity, nor is flowing in the gifts. These are all important but growing up is a process.

Stages of Growth

Babyhood, Greek word “Brephos” First breath/newborn baby
Early childhood, Greek word “Nepios” One who cannot speak

Late childhood (teenager), Greek word “Paidion”

Manhood, Greek word “Neaniskos”

Fatherhood, Greek word “Pater” Sow seeds

Babyhood

Needs

*Love

*Food

*Intercession prayer

To give them love is to teach them the nr. one principal of Christianity.

1Jo 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

Babies need milk, spiritual babies’ needs spiritual milk and this is the basics of the Word.

With out food no one will grow and without knowledge we can perish. We will need spiritual food for the rest of our spiritual life.

1Pe 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

1Co 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

Heb 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Heb 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskillfull in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

There is a tremendous battle to stay alive after being born again. Satan will attack them and try to destroy or at least slow down their growing process. We need to cover baby Christians in prayer.

Gal 4:19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

This is a beautiful example of such a prayer:

Eph 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Eph 3:15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

Eph 3:16 That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man;

Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Eph 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.

Eph 3:20 Now unto Hm that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Eph 3:21 Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Gal 4:19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

Perils

*Doubt
*Fear

*Rejection

Because of immaturity, they cannot stand in faith yet, fear easily and if they are treated badly they will feel rejected.

Jam 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

Jam 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Characteristics

Ignorance – Lack of knowledge
Irritability – Bad temper (Usually blame his/her ‘gene pool’

Self-pleases – Very self-centered

Easy offended – Very easy to feel hurt

Early childhood

This phase is normally after the baptism and filling with the Holy Spirit. A young child in Christ still walks in the flesh. We need to understand that the flesh and the spirit are opposed. The battleground is the mind. Either the flesh controls the mind or the spirit controls the mind. The mind can also be referred to as the hinge joint between the Spirit and the flesh. If the minds sides with the spirit, the flesh is left ‘high and dry’ and vice versa. If the mind is not renewed, doubt will enter, drop down to the spirit and eventually the spiritual experience with God will be rejected. The good news is that the born again child of God is not victim of his/her flesh. Our spirit can control our minds because we have the Holy Sprit within us.

1Co 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

1Co 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

1Co 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

1Co 3:4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

1Co 3:5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

1Co 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

1Co 3:7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

1Co 3:8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor.

1Co 3:9 For we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

1Co 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

It’s clearly that young Christians are not renewed by the word of God, but this is where it starts.

Needs

*Love
*Guidance
*Attention
*Prayer

Perils

Easily let astray – because they are very young in the Lord they can be easily:

Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Characteristics

Spasmodic – Will sporadic go to church/attend prayer meetings etc.
Unreliable – totally undependable, will promise things that they will never do.
Impulsive – Will hastily volunteer but won’t be able to follow up
Curious – interested in every spiritual thing.
Talkative – talks everything that is going on in their lives.
Impressionable – very vulnerable to be mislead.
Man-pleasers – wants to impress people

Late Childhood (teenager)

This stage means war, war between the flesh and spirit. The young child is now old enough to live by a new set of rules and this cause enormous conflict inside the teenage Christian.

Rom 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

1Pe 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

Needs

*Love
*Discipline
*Understanding

Teenage Christians still needs very much love but not fulltime attention anymore. They will need mature Christians to guide them through discipline. Some areas that need discipline:

Time – force a pattern of bible study and prayer time; help them to correct their priorities.
Money – Help them to understand tithing, sowing and giving.
Behavior – understanding the importance to be led by the Holy Spirit and not by emotions.

One day the teenager will produce ‘the fruit of the spirit’ and the next day works of the flesh will be display. This cause much uncertainty and the teenager will throw spiritual tantrums therefore they will need to be reassured that they are still ‘ok’ (understanding)

Perils

*Rebellion
*Disobedience
*Mood swings.

Disciple a few Christians through the years, I discover that the more love, attention and spiritual food you give them from early stages the less rebellious they will become in their teenage years. Most of the time rebellion (of the flesh and not a demonic force) speaks of uncertainty and insecurity.

Because teenage Christians tend to ‘know all’ they will be disobedience to leadership.

Characteristics

*Rebellion – against authority.
*Tantrums – When they can’t have it their way, they behave bad and try to control
*Know all – On every topic they just know ‘all about it’

Manhood

There is a place where a person stops sinning.

1Pe 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

This is after the flesh is crucified and the person arises with Christ in a new life. In simple terms – when you don’t live by how you where ‘programmed according to the world system’ before born-again but by the Word of God. The man in Christ will be able to live a sinless life and the fruit of the spirit will be part of his/her daily life.

1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1Jo 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
1Jo 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
1Jo 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
1Jo 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

Needs

*Workers
*Encouragement

Because of the enormous harvest and lack of mature workers they will work themselves to death. By knowing the Fathers heart they will press on and take it on them to 'save the world'

Perils

*Frustration
*Discouragement
*Burned out

Characteristics

Victorious – Their prayer live will be successful because of praying correctly and answered prayers.
Spirit-dominated – Walk by the leading of the Holy Spirit and not on emotions and feelings anymore.
Esteem earthy things lightly – The pleasures of the world has become null and void.
Bold –Courageous in spiritual warfare because they have revelation knowledge of whom they are in Christ.
God-pleasers – The accent is not on them anymore but on God and they don’t want their will be done but Gods.

Fatherhood

A fully grown Christian can bravely say ‘If you can’t follow Jesus follow me.’ With confidence a mature Christian will lead other Christians from ‘Egypt to Canaan’ (from born again to Christian adulthood)

1Co 4:14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
1Co 4:15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
1Co 4:16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
1Co 4:17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timothy, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.

Needs

*To be appreciated

There is nothing as frustrated as someone who asks advice and do not listen or follow a leader’s advice, its time wasting. A mature Christian may also feel untrustworthy.

Perils

*Apathy
*Retirement

If a leader has no followers what is there anyway to do?

Characteristics

*Resourceful – can give you practical advice to overcome your personal problems.
*Commitment to next generation – a very strong obligation to see younger Christians mature
*Tenderness and & compassion – will be able to tread the greatest sinner with loving kindness and care.

This teaching about the characters helped me so much with my Christian walk. Sometimes we help people and they reacted very badly and you get hurt and they judge them according to their action. Now I evaluate the person and knows exactly what kind of help do I have to give and if they treat me bad I know its because of where they are spiritually and I don’t take it personally and don’t judge.
