  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks for the response! I was really just confused as to the purpose - I've only just moved into the 'adult' world out of grad school and I haven't had to think about things like record certificates before. But the need for an admin fee makes sense, as does the need for a record in case I move - which is very likely this time in my life. Again, thanks for the help!

I've got this certificate, but my husband and I didn't pay a $10 processing fee, nor did I fill anything out- our priest sat us down and asked us questions and he filled everything out, IIRC. We're in the parish book. The certificate is mailed to you from the Archdiocese (we're Antiochian). Knowing our former priest, I'm not surprised he didn't bring up such a thing as a fee. :)

I don't know if it was your MP parish Joshua, but I think mine only keeps records locally (aka at the church and digital copies at Father's home). Not all jurisdictions have the same practice so I guess you'd have to ask the particular diocese. If it's only kept locally then ask the current priest at the church, ours at least has all records since the church was founded.
I got a certificate that was created by our priest but that has worked everywhere.
It was OCA. I actually would prefer a certificate from the MP not because it would make me feel more educated, but because I wouldn't get the raised eyebrow look when I go abroad. Even if it were some small village in the backwaters of Montenegro, they will still know what the MP is. I know realiztically anywhere I would really go I will be able to find SOMEONE (if not everyone) who knows what the OCA is, but that time at Putna Monastery when the only clergy member I knew who knew what the OCA was was the abbot of the monastery (not an easy man access since everyone in the village was lined up at his office to speak to him), I would just like a certificate from the Patriarchate (or the Patriarchal Vicar in New York).

Thanks for the heads up on the "locally" thing. That sounds rather "old world" compared to the organized western-minded OCA, GOArch, etc LOL.
