  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok so what is the best way to go about choosing a bible study?

God always leads me to the issue/subject, that's not an a problem. The problem I face is the choosing a study which is biblicaly sound. I know a few authors which I know (by doing and examining their studies) to be very sound biblicaly and definitely influenced by the Holy Spirit.

However I have also picked up some studies which have taught me unsound theology. Only later after God has lead me through much study and learning from the few authors I know to be sound, was I able to recognize the lack of influence of the Holy Spirit in some of the studies.

I have been meeting with several Spirit-filled women in my church who have helped me recognize lies I had acquired over the years, so I would like to avoid acquiring more. My normal method of choosing, starts with prayer, and lately have been sticking to a select few authors but would like to branch out.

Even if you just have tips or something they would be much appreciated.

Mythrainbow:

I usually do what you are doing. Find a sound teacher and stick with him until the Holy Spirit assigns me to another pastor-teacher. The ones I know encourage their congregations to examine what they teach in light of what Scripture has to say. Sometimes it takes a while to acquire enough general knowledge of the Bible to be effective at it. Most of the really sound teachers I know teach by book, by chapter, by verse. In this way you always understand the context of the passages. I have a list of men that teach like this and most of their classes are available online, if you are interested.

One of the biggest problems in Christianity today is preachers that build doctrines on one or two passages pulled out of context. It leads to massive error. The unfortunate thing is that many will flatly refuse to incorporate passages that are contrary to whatever they are teaching in the development of their theology. As a result they have an incomplete theology and the bad thing is that these false doctrines often disable the believer spiritually.

God promises to correct our thinking if we are off in any given area. Phil 3:15. Of course that is dependent on our desire for truth.
