Thanks Ley, My computer or server, whichever is really slow today. Have you ever had one of those days that you just feel mentally "ickie". I barely have the energy to to walk across the room. I should go outside and just breath some fresh air. Thanks for the good wishes though, it makes me feel better.:amen:
yep, I know all about days like that. days when it isn't worth getting out of bed.:sigh:

does your computer need defragging? that might speed it up a bit.

Blessings

You COULD also

clear out /delete THE CONTENTS of the Prefetch Folder
You will DISCOVER THIS YELLOW FOLDER in the C:WINDOWS FOLDER

seek it out - open it - select ALL and delete it ALL
close the folder, close the WINDOWS FOLDER

Go to the SYSTEM TOOLS
via START/ then PROGRAMS/ then ACCESSORIES
In the 'system-tools' SELECT > DISK-CLEANUP
activate it and when it has finished and displays
the various files it has found
ENSURE that ALL the TEMPORARY FILES are ticked
and click OK

Next: Click on START
Right click on the bar above the START button
Click on the word PROPERTIES
Click on the CUSTOMIZE button and in the next window
click on ADVANCED on the top toolbar
THEN click the CLEAR LIST button on the next window
click OK
click APPLY on the next window and then click OK again
DEFRAGMENT your disk drive again

NEXT
click START
Right click INTERNET EXPLORER
SELECT > PROPERTIES

click the DELETE button
and then
click the DELETE ALL button
in the small window you will be challenged
DO YOU WANT TO DELETE THESE FILES

BEFORE clicking YES
check the box that asks
do you also want to delete files created by other applications
NOW CLICK > YES

LOG-OFF
THEN
RESTART YOUR PC

AND
check 'THAT' OUT!!!! FOR CLEAN :)

IF, you have WINDOWS programs that are misbehaving
you should carry out a DSK CHK
This is a utility built-into WINDOWS XP
that will ensure that all windows system files EXIST
'where' they are supposed to be
and that they, HAVE NOT BEEN ALTERED

ASK.... and I will provide details on HOW to carry this out
This utility also has a disk doctor
ie: SIMILAR TO WIN 98 SCANDISK

It can check and attempt to recover damaged sectors on your disk drive
when failing to repair ANY damaged sector
it will copy the remaining information to a good sector
and logically repair 'any' lost details

AND will NEVER attempt to use that 'damaged sector' again
in other words that sector will become unaddressable in-future
and your harddrive will become smaller, as you lose-them

ASK and I will supply details for this too

Thank-you Ley, I did delete the temp files and cookies but did not defrag then I rebooted to see if that would help sense I have a bad habit of not turning the computer off at night.

Thank-you Dave. I am going to print off a copy of your post and go through it step by step. If I have any problems I will let you know.

Dave,
OK, I found the Prefetch Folder right where you said it would be but I'm afraid to delete all that stuff, it's full of stuff. Files like "Snood.exe" that's a game I play. Don't I need that file to execute the game? Also "rundll32" I recognize that windows dll from something I don't remember. Some of the other files are "setup.exe" "adobeupd", "dfrgntfs", "defrag.exe". There are a whole lot more.

ABOUT THE PREFETCH FOLDER

Lets look again at the title of that folder

'p r e f e t c h'

I wonder WHY they called it that ?

Every time you LIGHT-UP your PC ?
IT, wants to know what ? YOU WANT to do

You, are not conversing with it
It doesn't 'know' what to do next ?

So it resorts to settings and applications
that were running, the very last time you had it on ?

Your PC needs to store this information TEMPORARILY
so that it can refer to ALL of those little details
and provide your 'required services'

Your PC is designed to be able to start up the WINDOWS SYSTEM/ PLATFORM
but, details
concerning, other connections / 3rd party software
are required as-well
The Prefetch Folder then,
is one such place that your PC uses
to refer to say;
RECENT INSTALLATION SOFTWARE,
The 'present settings' for programs /software prior to shutdown
A record of various queries AND > WHAT WORKS for-you

Every time you use your PC ...
it is tracking and logging EVERYTHING, you do,
everywhere, you visit and game and utility 'SCORES'

Just by visiting a page on the internet
will mean that your PC will use several [perhaps MANY] bytes
to store that information

Over Time, these records, can, build into a sizeable chunk of, IN-USE / UNAVAILABLE memory-space

A note has been made
that WORRIES about getting rid/or, losing
MISSION CRITICAL STUFF from a PC
by amending the content of the PREFETCH FOLDER

UP FRONT ? IT IS ESSENTIAL... that you leave the folder
IN IT'S PLACE

The CONTENT
is entirely PAST OR, CURRENT
BUT
remain ONLY 'temporary references'
where IF,
you do the same thing DAY AFTER DAY
those files will be repeated and stored
DAY AFTER DAY TOO [afresh ?] [duplication ?]

Every time, you begin another task
ESPECIALLY a NEW ONE
your PC will trawl through all of this OLD DATA
to see if it can learn
HOW, WHAT , WHEN, WHY & WHEREFORE

It is like having OLD MAGAZINES in an attic
Got lots of good-stuff in them
MIGHT just need it one day

Then, one day.... the attic is almost full and you need an item
but have to search through the whole attic and
it cannot be found ?
The PC simply chugs around looking, for stuff you/ it, requires

It gets laggy.... Isn't up to holding say, a large folder open
whilst you have several web sites in the tabs
or, a fifth browser window also onscreen minimised

So, like your ATTIC, the prefetch folder
would really enjoy a springclean [say, once a month ?]

to HELP keep it LEAN and UNBURDENED
¬v
Empty-Shelves in a Library,
permits additional space for, NEW BOOKS ?????

I assure you, that if you SELECT ALL,
on the content, of, your prefetch folder
and DELETE only the contents

Your PC.... will boot WINDOWS 'normally'
and WILL...start your applications more quickly also

All the Prefetch Folder is ? is a DIARY of old stuff

Programs [and WINDOWS] they know HOW TO WORK when initialised [exe'd]
They dont need the archives you have in PREFETCH

>reminder<
TEMPORARY SETUP FILES /
list of queries /
and WHERE YOU WENT NEXT/
Games scores etc etc etc

Of course, by deleting SYSTEM FILES you will find yourself in trouble

My 'word' to you is that I do this several times a week

I have, two very large drives in my PC
they are in RAID configuration
which means, that my drives behave
as if they are a SINGLE DRIVE from the start of one
contguously through to the end of the second

Defragmenting lots of stuff [in my attic] could, take many days ??????????

The only reservation I HAVE [?]
in telling you all this ?
is, that I, am not sat in front of your monitor
and typing at your keyboard

iow: where I have been down this road
SO-OFTEN that I travel with confidence

YOU may have to be very vigilant
that YOU select
only those Folders /Buttons/Files
that are the contents of A SPECIFIC FOLDER
'accidents' / 'inattention' can really tick you off ????

CLEAN-UP programs can 'cost YOU money'

But with a little practice, ie:
in, creating/handling/modifying and moving folders

is all that you really need to be able to achieve
so that you can keep your PC 'running lean'

' IF IN DOUBT STOP AND ASK '

Doing DISK CLEANUP
after DELETING contents of PREFETCH folder
after DELETING Internet Explorer Cookies/Temp files
and THEN a defragmentation
will have your PC believing it has had
a week at a Health Club

:)

Well, Keep.... In the days of Win98 and Win98 SE
I too used to turn the PC off EVERY NIGHT

Leaving it on isn't a problem
ie:
in readiness for incoming MESSENGER messages
and also, to 'maintain a web page' for, a published web-site
and for the downloading of larger files [DVD Videos etc]

using 12 Volts and 5 Volts DC doesn't consume a lot of power
and, my BROADBAND package
is DESIGNED to be > ALWAYS-ON <

as with most electrical items...
switching items ON/OFF repeatedly,
can use LOTS MORE 'current'
than say; simply leaving it on
ie: more expensive [NOT economical]
?
the SURGE of power, around a freshly-opened circuit
finding resistance in the line
creates a heat spike
which then settles to a 'running temperature' [par]
MORE CURRENT is used to fill the opened-circuit
than is needed to run it

Repeated on and off switching
therefore, uses MORE-ELECTRIC
each time the circuit is closed and opened again
than having left it up and running
Whilst washing the pots
and running the hoover around the house for-example

With a GOOD anti-virus/Trojan Crusher
leaving PC > ON < all night is not a problem
provided fire-detection /alarms are situate
to WARN sleepers of, Fire Threat

Also I noted the mention of, IMPORTANT 'sounding' Files
found in the prefetch folder ?

These are notes, that say that your PC has 'referenced' looked at/ used, these files
that are held elsewhere in your PC SYSTEM
to effect proper function
ais: Nothing Mission-Critical resides there in the prefetch folder
If you like... It contains, scraps of, notes
some of which only your PC can read
that POINT TO and LOG the tools looked-for/used

example: POWER ON.... run windows setup~
check monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer /scanner attached yes/no
are there any additional services attached yes/no
do I need to setup an internet connection FIRST
or, provide desktop facilities first ?
Defrag started ,,,
addresses of temp space utilised for temp movement of, files
iow: defragmenting the fragmented needs ROOM
and this needs to be tied-down 'exactly'
IF, you dont have enough space
then DEFRAGMENTER will fail and not be able to re-sort
contiguous file storage

Hi everyone.: It's good that if your 50 or with a plus (+)you can get together..

Perhaps you can help? Some of my friends, sisters and brothers are not yet 50+, I have a friend who came to CF and wanted to find me, as we have a 6hr time difference I suggested looking for me on this forum, as we had tried to connect and seemed to be unable to find each other. She hasnot been back here or on CF.

I noticed Lavenderlee had called one time, looking to say hello, Dave you did ask her to read the rules, and mentioned "infringement" as in, we do not want to do that! Absolutely. we donot.

So I have a request, hoping someone can kindly suggest where all ages (as my friends range in ages) could fellowship/share or chat on CF. If each age group is restricted to me because I am 50+ there must be a forum I am missing.. Please answer with love as I donot know why my friend hasnot returned to CF.

Hello jayh [Jean]

Please forgive this old flatulent
he too, does have his senior-moment [or, three]
and the old memory...
relies upon GOOD LINKS
so, to keep his STUFF 'current'

At this moment of reading
the above-message of your's
I have absolutely NO-IDEA
whatever INFRINGEMENT that you are referring to

We WELCOME 'visitors' of all ages here
and whilst, we maybe, wouldn't be COMFORTABLE
if a whole bunch of, teenagers were disrupting
our many-threads
I am sure, I would not
have sought-to
drive someone away for, my own 'pettiness'

If, you are able to locate the post you-mention [?]
Please, RIGHT-CLICK the number at the top left of the relevant message
THEN, post it here

I will look at Lavenderlee's message AND my response
and will then know > WHAT < caused me to write;
'a-response' such as you have mentioned

Please BELIEVE, that I would not have been,
at-all intentionally 'unsociable'
but at this present time... I don't recall the name
other-than it being very vaguely familiar

Short of, playing 'catch-up'
I am unable to consider 'WHY'
I asked her [as you say] 'to read the rules'

As for, giving your friends /family access to you
I can recommend:
Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger
WHEN, with a microphone and a webcam each
VIDEO-CONFERENCING, will give you
Real-Time [face-to-face] Communications
WHATEVER YOUR TIME DIFFERENCES [?]

It is FREE to install and PRIVATE [contacts ONLY]
Using the Keyboard-Based messenging system
you could, also
ADD 'other contacts' to a conversation [text-chat] ?
I don't believe there is a limit
as to how many, can share 'simultaneously'

You CAN, at any time
Create a THREAD of, your OWN here
[example: HesMyAlls Fifties Fellowship Thread] ?
although, ONLY MEMBERS of, CF
will be able to post-messages to it [?]
It would also, be subject to the Forum Rules
ie: offensive or, business[trading messages] are not-allowed

I believe, that, the Age-Restrictions ensure
that 'BIRDS, OF, SIMILAR FEATHER'
can fly-together
[in the comfort of, similar 'outlook/ experience']

I wish to assure you,
that we, at GE50+ do not wish to hide, behind 'LOCKED-DOORS'
and would welcome
shall we say; enquiries from, advice seekers

I would LIKE, the opportunity,
to look-again, at the messages you mentioned
Where, then, I might be enabled
to redress ANY-MISUNDERSTANDING that may exist

your Bro'

Hello Dave, thank you for your reply, I tried to pm but know you prefer not to use that at this time.

Also thank you for your kind reply and your heart.

We have met, friends and I on msn, some sharing for a long time and we have had fellowship, and smile as we often have said, it was like walking in a garden and Jesus drew near. The elder can help the younger, and Oh! brother how much the younger often helped the elder!

MSN:
I know that is open but it's not a christian fellowship site and is limited. I have gleaned so much here, if you had looked over your shoulder you would have seen me gleaning!! :) but like Ruth to share it as so many of you do.

The post dear brother was on the 18th January 2008, the 7th and 8th down. Infringement was not written, just -Infringe..

You have so much heart Dave, thank you for the suggestion of a thread I hadnot thought of that, some of my younger friends are mature in Christ, it's been a pleasure to know them. Oh and we do laugh too and have our times out of "school" and go into the playground! Just my way of speaking.. I was sad to think if age groups couldnot fellowship together here then it would be like being in the same College but separated, which you seem to have understood with out my saying. Thank you for that.

I am your sister in Christ and hope you will forgive any unnecessary concern on my part..jean Jayh

jayh I read the post that Lavenderlee made and daves response. There was no age listed for your friend so no way to know she was not 50 +. It appears to me that dave was just giving her some welcome advice. It is good to read the rules and maybe that is what she did and felt she could no longer post in GE threads. i am sorry you have lost contact with your friend but as the post following show she was welcomed to the thread not turned away. Hello again Jean

my post...the 'one' you linked me to [?]
http://christianforums.com/showpost.php?p=42716826&postcount=88

Shows 'me' reassuring Lavenderlee
that there are rules
which, FORBID certain behaviours [in Forums]

This 'extract' from it :-

""Please, read the Forum Rules
We have no wish to contradict/ infringe them ""

was intended to provide 'site commentary' [proof]
for her protection

BECAUSE:
Lavenderlee's post [above mine]
showed concern for,
the 'comments' in posts that preceded her's

I assumed, that her disquiet, was because of,
CONCERNS she may have had regarding 'perhaps'
a 'lack of, fellowship'
being/ or seeming to be apparent. in that thread

Now.... the subject matter
[in the direction the thread had taken]
concerned matters NOT ALLOWED in the rules
either on the forums OR, in the PM system

Whether Lavenderlee was under 'aged 50'
is irrelevant to my reply-message
BECAUSE
her-post DID NOT DISPLAY her age

I [now] assume.... that she didnt return
BECAUSE
she was not FULLY AQQUAINTED with-detail
where, site rules FORBID 'such discussions'

Had she understood the posts, declared
that, a newbie member was attacking/calling
a long-term member via my PM box
and that I stood by the [attacked] Brother-in-Christ
by deleting the [attacker] member
from, my buddy list
then, maybe,
she wouldnt have left-behind-her
the message she in fact posted

IMHO
I had endeavoured to enlighten all
_as to the hypocrisy of, that member
whom didn't have the spine
to speak his opinions openly,
regarding another member
And, as 'that person' no-longer frequents GE50+
the attacked has gone on, to receive
good fellowship from, my Brothers and Sisters here

There are indeed many good threads here
But, we are not yet perfect and from time to time
we ARE.... tested [?]

If, we..... as individuals 'have-concerns'
over a message
We can/ are-encouraged/ indeed SHOULD... press the REPORT button
and let CF STAFF moderate/ adjudicate
on the matter

There is every possibility that Lavenderlee
saw 'that thread'
as TOO HOSTILE a-situation, for her comfort
and maybe
didn't even look around on other threads

For my part, I would be very sad to learn that
I had a part, in the 'driving-away' of, a new member

On the other hand
Lavenderlee MIGHT, have construed
that the rules re: age
were rigidly adhered to
and that it was not allowed for her to stay

I am NOT age-predjudiced
and have myself invited members
slightly younger than 50 years to share fellowhip here

I would like to add a note, in line-with, your enquiry

The Over-30's Forums
would accept your presence
BECAUSE YOU ARE 'Over 30'
and maybe your friends and family too
would be accepted there

Lavenderlee WAS welcomed here by a Sister
after my post,
but she didnt receive a reply

I think my-suggestion
re: opening your own thread
and inviting them to join you there
would be a good means to dipping your toe
into the unknown
and, I wish you and your's every success, with-it
