We have different organizations call from time to time to come and collect used clothing and small household items so that spurs me on to go through my stuff and weed out unused items. I have a box on the go at the moment. I have a huge problem getting rid of my books DVD's and CD's though even if I haven't viewed or listend to them in ages...My adult children still living at home have a ton of stuff too and clothing I can go through but they have sooo much more than just clothes. Maybe we could support and encourage one another? I have burnt loads of paperwork and binned a lot of stuff. Another load went to the tip for recycling and a large box full of bits and pieces went to the charity shop

This thread has sure fallen away since dave left. Thought I would revive it. On the subject of giving to charity, I just gave a way two more boxes of stuff. It seems I aways have stuff to let go. With my mother in law selling and moving I am sure a lot of her stuff will end up here. I just have no idea where it will all go. Hopefully she will get the bug to give lots away. Especially clothes, that woman had more clothes than walmart.
The other thing is I finally got out with our street ministry team at the end of August. it was an eye opener. We had a couple of opportunities to pray with people but it was mostly giving out food and shoe and socks and stuff. We live in a pretty messed up city lots of crack addiction and homelessness downtown. It is not as wide spread here in our suburb but we still met with about 20 souls needing help. Jan

Also my son and I had an absoultely faboulous time at the wedding we went to August 8th in Alberta. It was so fun being outside among the Hoo Doos of the park. The groom and groomsmen were in barefeet. Kind of like a hawaii wedding or something. (except for the mosquitos lol). Fun though. I am supposed to start work tomorrrow but my eye lid surgey was delayed till tomorrow so will be off for the week (hopefully that is all) and start next week. Jan

I have been going through closets and drawers and have a nice bag of clothing to give away. Went through eyeglass cases last month and left them at the recycling place.

Glasses are a great blessing especially in third world countries. I remember our Baptist church years ago used to support a ministry called Operation Eyesight started in Canada by Dr. Ben Gullison. He would use Rx glasses and recycle them using them for people without access to prescription glasses. I guess the eyeglass recycling was eventually taken over by the Canadian Lions Clubs.

We took 2 bags of baby stuff to the charity shop last week. The grandchildren are growing up fast and we don't anticipate anymore ... :o

It is always good to recycle. I just went to the thrift store on Thursday. Saw some beautiful pottery goblets. Was tempted but resisted as I already have enough. I just love potter so much though. Did get a neat book on dinosaurs. Figured I should read up as my niece married a paleontogoist.

I can't buy another thing, even at very reduced prices and I certainly don't need another thing. I know I will be happier with much less "stuff."

Yes Buttercup, I know what you mean. It is amazing what we can live without if we really try. It breaks my heart to see so much waste in the world, which is why I like to try and pass things on to a charity shop where possible. I did ring social services to offer the baby things but no-one called back. I had thought that maybe a young mum could make good use of bedding etc for her baby. It was all in excellent condition. Never mind.

I don't know if this is done in the UK, but a lot of people here have "garage or yard sales." This helps a lot of people make a little extra money and also sell their no longer wanted or needed items to those who might. Generally, the prices are very low. People don't want to pay a lot at these. They are a lot of work to do though. Haven't done one in years myself but they are quite popular around here and do seem to benefit both seller and buyer.

I know what you mean Ley. I was so blessed when my kids were small by really lovely used things from family, friends of family and church friends. It made a huge difference to us. God really did provide for us through them. I think younger people have a warped idea of it all, feeling all must be new and perfect and with credit purchases so easily available. Jan

People over here tend to do car boot sales on a designated site. this involves getting up at stupid o'clock on usually a Sunday morning and spending hours in a field trying to sell your stuff and most probably taking most of it back home with you. Not all of it is genuine either - a lot can be stolen goods or illegal downloads and things like that. I have tried carbooting once - never again.

Yeah most garage sales here are legit but there are people that seem to have an awful lot of garage sales in some areas. I tend to avoid them although I did get some lovely etchings from a neighbour who had owned a gallery for a number of years and was selling off stuff. They weren't real cheap but worth it I thought.
Like I said there are non profit organizations that collect then sell the stuff or stock their own second hand stores. Value Village and Salvation Army stores are big here. I think in the states it is called something else.

Our neighbor is having a garage sale today. I took some of Benjamin's baby things over to try and sell. Car Seat, sit & spin, high chair, booster seat. Hope it all goes and the money will go to get him a new bike.

No, that doesn't sound good at all! Garage sales here are held at your own home generally or sometimes churches will have what they call "rummage sales." They're fine. I generally think they are too much trouble but if you price things right, you WILL likely sell most of your stuff. Again, we did it years ago when we were in college, primarily because we needed the money so badly and it was a fairly quick, reliable way of getting some cash in hand! (We made about $200 in 2 days even though we had nothing large to sell and that many years ago, $200 was nothing to sneeze at!)

Yes, Jan, we also have Salvation Army thrift shops and other thrift shops here.

Miss, hope you sell enough of Benjamin's to get that bike!
