I would love to grow a small garden and did try when we first moved into our own house but here because it rains soooo much the soil gets pretty leached out and requires a lot of attention to get a good product. I have been spoiled living for years as a kid in Alberta with beautiful rich black top soil everywhere to be found. Here it must be ordered and trucked in at great effort and expense. Composting is dicey because it attracts the rats(yuck) and also the rocks were insane I had curly cue carrots. LOL. Anyway I do love my veggies having grown up used to the way home garden grown tasted.

You could have a small raised garden plot. Simply frame a rectangular area with 12x2's, painted to protect the wood, and then gradually bring in good soil to work with. You can then grow carrots, beets ad other such small plants..prolly enough to do your household with fresh garden produce.

Cheers, Jim
All very true , Jim :)

Tho, we (in my own Little-family) - didn't have time, for allah that "framing".

So, I just bought *5-acres* :D Yup, we grew & relished ~

Well good morning Jim. I didn't get up till 8 as this week is Spring Break here in North Van and I don't have to go to work at school. It isn't a very appetizing day though very rainy as usual. I hope it settles down it poured on Saturday as well and it was even too much for me trying to do shopping haul groceries in etc. Usually I am much more tolerant of our wet weather but I think I have just had enough and am ready for cherry blossoms and rhododendrons in bloom. Jim's idea is great, and we used something like it here in Texas where our dirt is nothing but played out cotton field. When you raise the bed, you can bring in better soil or amend what you have with cow manure, peat moss, or whatever. We did little 5 foot by 5 foot plots one time. Another time we framed larger areas. Both worked well.

You don't have to use painted wood for framing. Railroad ties work well, for example. The idea is just to raise the whole bed with better dirt...

Annie, we grow the best tomatoes here I've ever eaten!

More poetry, anyone?

You seemed to like the poem I put on this thread. I copied a few more to CF tonight, all mine. I thought I'd give you the url. Maybe there's something someone would like?
