Hello all. I'm glad to see that everyone is doing well. I made my Thanksgiving shopping list today; the kids always want same ole fixings. I was taken aback to realize it's just a week away. Then Christmas. I'm such a Scrooge, but I do what I can for the boys' sake.
There's no reason for me to be down, It's what I do in the winter, later fall as it is. God is good to me! My needs are met and family love me.
You all have a good evening.
Hi Marsha
I was just doing my holiday food list at supper time
Re: Christmas......with all of us on low/no/disability incomes, we decided to let the gifts go and just buy for the2 grandkids.
It was getting crazy....no one needed anything and we just swapped $$ for $$ essentially in gift cards or certificates
This saves $$, we can put a bit more into the dinner, it eliminates shopping stress/crowds, and the kids have fun
40+ years ago it was so different.....we would take a bus downtown, and buy gifts in the shops.
Main Street had Christmas lights and music, and you had a list of gifts to get.....it was so festive on a snowy night
Now everyone has what they want/need IMMEDIATELY and are not into the trinket gifts, whereas years ago you could buy something simple with them in mind, they had to SAVE UP for it, or put it on a list for a birthday or Christmas.....we didn't have credit or malls.
We also had a year where right after the new Year we all set about making/exchanging only home crafted gifts for one another.....
woven place mats, knitted/crocheted afghans etc.
That was neat, but people don't appreciate such things now!
I miss those days
Ok....rant over
Have a nice night
Very true
There was no lack of gratitude..... just a commentary on the 'good old days'.... where were not always easy, but people appreciated the simple things much more then, because they had less to give, but a truer spirit of giving!
There are expectations and disappointments in every age, and I think even more so in this age, because there is so much at a person's fingertips.
Everything is 'instantaneous gratification' today, and there is much to be said about hard work of having to 'save' for something, and appreciation for the simplistic values of older times.
My OP was just an innocent reply to a comment on Christmas, that caused me to reminisce on the 'good old days' as I perceived them.
In our simplistic family celebrations today we make sure that the focus in on JESUS ,AS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON....and not the stores opening at midnight Thanksgiving night
Any further discussion probably deserves it's own thread ~ back to 'chit chat'
Nice ~ praying for good weather and safe travel((((((hugs)))))).
We travel to our son's place next week.
We always have the holidays, and my kids come, but siblings are scattered, and usually not seen; it is hard with married couples to see both sides! Those were good days Gail...Christmas really means Jesus to me more and more...not the usuall Santa Claus stuff...I think many see how empty that culture has become.
A really special gift for me would be to have my whole family together...maybe someday it will happen.
Where did you actually grow up (you mentioned it was colder)?Yep....I miss all the elders who have gone on to glory...really miss the colder weather I grew up with too. But there are other joys I did not have then...the truth of His word is very satisfying.
I have a very bad allery problem today...nose is pouring, think I will go out to the health food store tomorrow for some different things to take for this.
I will be steaming floors anyway.
I won't judge that.... nobody said it would be easy.... only, that it would be worth it
I can only agree, that we may see some things as 'worse'
BUT, that also has something to do with 'expectation' and 'disappointment'
>instead of, gratitude, for coming 'so-far' ...despite the perceived negative changes

Since our 3 parents have passed the past few years, Jim's 2 brothers and 1 family have also joined us, which has been nice; my sister has come off and on depending on her in-laws plans.
Yeah, the culture has me concerned for my grandsons; with my daughter away from her faith community now, I hope and pray JESUS is not lost to their lives...especially the boys as they grow
Where did you actually grow up (you mentioned it was colder)?
I am also finding a serenity that I didn't have in my youth; it surely comes from the Lord and His Living Word....which is all we need
Oh goodness...no funHope you feel better!
I am in 'putter mode' (aka cleaning)
The wonderful weather we have had, as well as feeling better with my diet change and exercise, has given me a new energy
of body, mind, and spirit(but I still must PACE myself )
Be blessed dear friend
My wife and I still like the simple and personal gifts the most.
Family pictures.
Cards done by the grand-kids.
My son is coming home for Thanksgiving, so we'll consider that as one of our best gifts this year. We'll all get together and have a good time.
Yes, Jesus is the reason for the season.
Psalms 100:1-5 (NASB)
Psalms 100
1 A Psalm for Thanksgiving. Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing. 3 Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; [We are] His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving [And] His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. 5 For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.
What a great Christmas card that precious angel face would make; she is so cute

I agree.
Hi Brinny and Shirley
Sinus stuff is no fun; my right ear finally cleared up after 10 days of stuffiness, hearing loss etc
Rest up nowI am (work is done for the day!)
I spent most of today with an ice bag on my head. I really don't know if it's a migraine or sinus, but I think that it's sinus and allergies. We've had a couple of freezes here recently, so maybe I'll get some relief. I guess it could also be getting used to some new medicine my heart doctor has me take. I'm a walking pharmacy now.
