Remember Tiananmen Square?

If you don't, please watch the PBS documentary, Tank Man.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/

In 1989, the Chinese government and military brutally crushed a peaceful uprising of the people. Despite this, and the other innumerable human rights abuses of the People's Republic of China, the U.S. government continues to grant Most Favored Nation status to this fascist nation. Why?

I would also recommend watching the documentary, Walmart: the High Cost of Low Price

http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=walmart+the+high+cost+of+low+price&hl=en

It's totally hypocritical that China can get away with murder while we invade other nations for much less.

Didn't hear many complaints when Clinton signed a waiver allowing Loral Aerospace CEO Bernard Schwartz to send technicians to the PRC to help them upgrade their Intercontinental Ballistic Missile force.

Clinton and Bush are on the same team, and they have the same agenda.

Not everything in the world is about Republicans proving Democrats wrong and Democrats proving Republicans wrong. What has been going on in China for decades is a matter of grave concern on humanitarian grounds. Though I understand that in a situation as polarised as that in America it is tempting to use everything possible as a way of slinging mud at the 'other side', there are some issues that are too serious to be degraded to the level of partisan politics.

We can sit around batting, "Bush is evil because ____" and, "Clinton was worse because ___" backwards and forwards forever (and that is the only way I see things going at the moment in America) but that's not actually going to help anyone.

Believe it or not, our humanity and not our political affiliation is our most fundamental characteristic.

I agree. Trying to turn this into a partisan issue is ridiculous.

So...what are you suggesting we adopt as our new foreign policy regarding China?

How about to stop destroying our economy in favor of building theirs?

It should be illegal for American corporations to outsource jobs to China, build and maintain factories within its borders, or export technology and expertise to its military. All manufacturing should be returned to the U.S. as soon as possible. Or do we think its patriotic and democratic for us to allow Chinese peasants to work seven days a week in deplorable conditions so that we can buy cheap baubles at WalMart?

We should end trade with China until its government is reformed and its people are set free. Of course, we can't do that until we reverse the destruction of our own country that is happening right before our very eyes.
