  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yesterday, people waited in long lines for a chicken sandwich. It wasn't just in one area or even in the Bible Belt, but nationwide at every CFA store. What do you think? Is it just a temporary pushback against liberal intolerance, or was it a sign from God that we can beat the enemy with His help? I started the day thinking that it was a strong political statement, but as the day went on and I got a call from my wife who was standing in a line for her chicken sandwich at 9pm, I began to really realize the power of what was happening and I knew that this is not the work of humans, but was God smiling on Dan Cathy for taking a stand and giving all of us a bit of encouragement that we can do the same.

hi Bryan,

I don't know if it was a sign from God, but I agree that we should all, who agree that God created marriage and it is the lifelong relationship between a man and a woman, feel encouraged that this is right and that there are many among us who believe and support God's ways.

God bless you.

As they say, God works in mysterious ways, and although there are so many outrageous things our government does that should cause a backlash of such huge proportions, it was a simple statement of faith that started this one. Cathy did not make a grandiose statement demanding action or requiring compliance to his point of view. He just stated that he supports the biblical definition of marriage and then warned us that we face God's wrath if we continue to tell Him what is right.

I am going to give God praise for sending us this sign and I really hope that we take it as such and realize that God is on our side if we just stop being so hardheaded.

Sounds pretty awesome. Got a link to the story somewhere?
CF won't let me link yet, but it is on every news website. Try the FoxNews site for the best coverage. Naturally, the media is trying to ignore it or downplay it as much as possible, but if you accumulate the facts on yesterday's events, you will see the hand of God at work.

But I did get this quote:
"We are very grateful and humbled by the incredible turnout of loyal Chick-fil-A customers on August 1 at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country. We congratulate local Chick-fil-A Owner/Operators and their team members for striving to serve each and every customer with genuine hospitality," the company said in a statement. "While we don't release exact sales numbers, we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day."

Marriage being a sacred bond between one man and one woman created by God, why do you care if the government makes homosexual marriage legal? It harms no one but satisfies many, besides the fact that gays pay taxes too.

Hi obscure,

I'm sorry, did I say somewhere that I cared whether government made same sex marriages legal? I don't expect any government, although I would hope the government of Israel would, to be particularly godly in their governing. The issue is that Mr. Cathey made a statement that reflected his personal belief about the terms of marriage according to God and he was fairly quickly villified by many.

The outpouring of support shown during this period just reinforces that apparently many, many people agree with Mr. Cathey. Perhaps you don't, and if so, I would imagine that you didn't participate. That is certainly your perogitive.

The only government issue that arose from Mr. Cathey's statement was that several mayors, and other more local politicians began making comments about not allowing Chic-fil-A to do business in their communities. I find it a fairly unjust thing for a government to refuse a business to do business because of the personal beliefs of its governing body. Are we now going to give, along with business license applications, a form where the owners and high level leaders of that company will have to disclose their personal views on moral or spiritual issues? What do you think? Is it your stand that Mr. Cathey, or anyone else who is a business man, or any kind of community leader, cannot be allowed to express their understanding or opinion if it goes against someone else's understanding or opinion? Where do you draw the line?

God bless you.

Sign from God and a political backlash, perhaps? They both work for me.

I think it was a combination of things. I know that many Christians are/were tired of being told how "bad" they are for their opinion that hold based on their religious beliefs... and many Americans are/were tired of seeing another fellow American being told to "shut up" by the extreme left.

I'd guess that many who stood in line did not care about that.

But I'll bet they cared about the real issue.

It's simply a question of whether or not a person has religious freedom in this country anymore.

It's not an issue of gay rights; it's a question of the rights of everyone, including gays, to hold perfectly legal religious beliefs and not be discriminated against by the government because of it.

Not necessarily a referendum on gay marriage since a lot of people who went support gay marriage but also support people's (i.e. Mr. Cathy's) First Amendment rights to express their personal views and not have businesses barred by a city just because have different values.

But encouraging nonetheless..and inspiring, because despite the big crowd, everyone was calm, polite, the restaurant was clean, and the employees did a great job.

What a delicious way to show our support for the view of traditional marriage.
Our meal was promply served good food with friendly service.

I agree about the food. As for the impact of this incident upon the future of the company, it's hard to say. Sometimes there's a big deal at the start, then a fizzle and it's forgotten. Sometimes, it continues on. We'll have to see how this goes.

However, I have two thoughts about this particular matter.

1. Chic-fil-A is essentially a Southern company and is unknown in many parts of the North. This could give it an important opening to the areas of the country where it is little known at present. The most controversial opposition to the company occurred with the mayors of Chicago and Boston, according to the media, so that might be what happens--expansion in the North with a waiting customer base.

2. There was NOT the usual united front on the part of the Leftwing media. While some, predictably, wanted to charge the CEO with everything they could come up with, true or manufactured, other commentators on the usually-reliable networks actually made clear that, in their opinion, there was no discrimination going on and the accusations were offbase.
