  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What really helps my kids is to spend lots of time with them when they are feeling down. We might talk about the issue --sometimes very little needs to be said. My kids thrive on time devoted specially to them. My daughter loves to play games--that cheers her up every time. My son likes books. I try to remember to pray with them about the thing too, and remind them of God's presence and that He understands.

Lucy made an excellent post! I pretty much do the same thing.

One thing that I would like to add though, and something that I really try to teach my children is that happiness is a choice it is NOT dependent on any circumstances or any person. I do not know if this makes sense, but I can wake up everyday and choose to be happy...no one can take that away from me! My joy is in the Lord.:)

I have a trick I used on my kids. Even now, as big as they are, they remember, and OH how they hated it, LOL!

When the kid is whiny, crying, bad-tempered, you tell him: "Okay, it's bad-mood time. I WANT you to stay in a bad mood. I'll even help you cry. But under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you to laugh. Got it? NO LAUGHING, I don't even want to see a SMILE."

Then CRY very loudly with the child. And make SURE you point out any smiles or giggling, and insist that no laughing is allowed.

It works. And the kid gets so MAD at himself for falling for it!

Peace be with you,
~VOW
