Cheating on a test

I cheated on a midterm for my online Politics class, and it's been on my heart ever since. I try to justify it by saying that I only referred to my notes for two questions, but deep down I know that it doesn't make a difference. Earlier today, I was ready to send an email to my teacher about it, but then I read on the school's honor code page that any student who cheats will receive a failing grade... and if I fail this exam, I fail the class. It's causing me so much guilt, but I don't know if I can go through with telling my professor. Should I risk it?

Sometimes we choose to live with our sins rather than confess them to others. It definitely takes longer to get past them that way.

Your heart is obviously contrite, and I believe God will hear your prayers for forgiveness.

That said, if you are God's child, He will chastise you (Hebrews 12:7-11). But he is merciful and his chastisements are meant to call us closer to Him.

I'm certainly in no position to speak for God. But from my perspective, it looks like you have a choice to make...

1. Choose your own discipline
2. Let God choose it for you

I'm praying for you.

Schools have the ability to arrange proctors for online tests -- they require that you take them in libraries or whatever. They also require locked browsers for some tests. Since your teacher did not arrange for security for this online test, I wonder if it really might have been open book to some extent. It was probably timed, so you wouldn't have had the chance to look up the whole test.

There is a strange phenomenon that occurs in life, without much logic. We judge people for doing things, so sure that we will never do them. Then one day we find ourselves opening the door to it. Once we have done that, we are so angry at ourselves, disappointed, because we have not met our own standards of perfection. We are as bad as the people we judged, and we can hate ourselves as much as we hated those people.

To much is given, much is required... you were already aware of consequences, where some people might have taken it less seriously. So you are holding yourself to a higher standard.

Something happens when we get angry at ourselves, that we find ourselves repeating the thing we would never ever do; we can no longer proudly say "I never did that."

Nobody is born an addict or a serial killer... they hit a point where they see they are capable of wrongdoing (or else they don't see it at all).

Some people self-destruct when they realize they are capable of failing. Look at the Cornell suicides in the news this week-- stressed students. Life vs. perfection...

Pray that God will forgive, release your guilt, and restore you to the point you were before you made that choice. Now you are wiser, and possibly more compassionate with others. But use this experience for the good -- including good in your own life.
