  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was just talking with a friend and got the idea of starting a thread where you can post what you cook for yourselves that's pretty easy and within a college budget

My favorite is egg drop soup, and I'm not talking about that nasty msg fat soup you get at china town either ;)

I usually make a whole pot full so you can vary the recipe any way you want. Here's what I do:
Ingredients:
Water
Chicken bullion
Some carrots
Stalk of celery
1 Onion
1/2 head of chinese cabbage (but you can use any cabbage)
8 Eggs
Your favorite soup stone :D

1. Start off with as much boiling water as you want to make soup, I use about 8 cups. Put as much chicken bullion in the water is required per cup

2. Chop up as many carrots and celery as you desire, I like to fill mine with veggies

3. Chop up the onion and put it in

4. Slice up the cabbage and add that to the pot

5. Crack all the eggs you want and whisk them in a bowl

6. After all the veggies are cooked bring the water to boiling or near boiling and slowly pour the egg into the soup while you constantly stir it. The slower you stir, the larger the chunks of egg will be (which is what I love) stir if faster if you want small pieces of egg.

7. Throw in your magical stone ^_^ and serve!

It's really healthy too, just has a few msgs from the bullion or use some without.

You don't need much to make stone soup ;)

It sounds really good, but you definitely need a functioning stove, which unfortunately my dorm doesn't have. It does, however, provide one that takes 54 minutes to boil water. :p

No you don't. Just break off a few legs from the couch, pile them in the middle of the floor, put some water in a pot, and throw a match on it all

Not sure exactly how cheap it is, and it requires an oven, but this is a really good sandwich.

Pre-grilled chicken strips (Tyson makes some good ones, comes in a resealable pack)
Ranch dressing
Shredded cheese (I like colby and monteray jack, but any type is fine)
Kaiser roll (or your favorite type of bread)

Put the chicken, ranch and cheese on the bread and bake at 350 for about 10 minutes. Since the chicken has already been cooked, you're just heating it and melting the cheese. I leave the bun open and spread a little butter on the bottom of the top half as to get a nice toasted roll.

cook some sausage in a pot (I prefer spicy)
Cut them into slices
add cooked rice
and a can of crushed tomatoes (the kind with onions and peppers)
add a can of black or kidney beans
garnish with a little lemon juice and some sour cream

It's super fast, super easy jambalaya!

Ok, here's another one of my favorites:

Peas on Toast

1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can of mushrooms (I like extra)
1 bag of frozen sweet peas
1 loaf of bread

Make soup, add extra mushrooms if you like em as much as I do. Put as many peas in as you like. It's not pea soup so put enough in so the peas in the soup can chill on a slice of toast. Toast your bread, get it hot enough to kill the mold. Put the peas on the toast and enjoy! I know it sounds messy but it can easily be eaten on a plate with a fork. The toats soaks up the soup niceley.

1) Take whatever meat cold-cut you've got in your fridge. Chop it into scraps and throw it on a hot griddle with some Morton's seasoning and pepper.

2) Make rice in a rice-cooker.

3) Throw carrot and celery bits onto the grill with your meat.

4) Put some rice in the bowl, scoop in some of your meat and veggies, stir it up, and eat it.

Works for me...

Hey guys, if you have a pot-luck or some kind of get together on campus and need to make some dish up real quick,or even if you need a snack and can't get to the store, try some beer bread! For those teetotallers out there I'm sure a neighbour will be able to provide (and the alcohol will evaporate in the oven). I've experimented with some, stouts and porters tend not to taste too, i find a Red Ale sometimes does well, or a Pilsner or a Pale Ale.

Beer bread
I've heard the warm beer works best, but I've tried it lots of times with cold ones and its turned out fine. The only thing you might need to scrounge around for is a loaf pan, which could be tricky to find if your in residence.
3 cups flour ( Haven't tried whole wheat, might pose some problems with leavening the dense whole wheat)
2-3 tablespoons sugar ( have yet to try a recipe with brown sugar or honey, might be some out there though)
3 tsp baking powder
1.5 tsp salt
Pre-heat that oven up to 350 F and grease your loaf pan, I usually just spread some olive oil with my fingers, making sure to get the sides well and good. I find it best to mix up all the dry ingredients in a big bowl, and pour the beer at a moderate speed and quickly stir with the other hand, its best to get the dough formed quickly so the baking powder and the carbon dioxide from the bear start to make the bubbles. pour on the pan, spread evenly around and pop it into the oven. Beer bread usually takes about 50 -60 minutes to cook, sometimes I'll take it out after 45 and melt some butter or margarine on the top, put it back in for that last 10 minutes or so, makes a really nice golden crust on the top. You'll be tempted to slice it open the minute you get it out of the oven , try to give it a bit of time to cool though, say about 10-15 minutes. Its very good with a sweet jam or even just with butter, but it goes stale pretty quick, so make sure people get it while its hot and fresh!
well, enough of my ramblings, Beer bread is easy, and most of the time it comes out great, but I've had some bad batches before. If it goes wrong please do share, I'll try to help out.
Happy Baking!

I got a good one. Just made it tonight!

Pasta Salad!
It's especially great the next day and is great if you hae to pack a lunch.

chop up all the different veggies that you want. I like a lot of veggies in mine; here are some ideas...
canned mushrooms
cherry tomatoes
chopped celery
black & green olives
onions
cucumbers
red & green bell peppers
pickles
hard salami chopped into pieces

boil a pound or more of that spiral pasta, mix in the veggies and meat and then add zesty italian dressing (about half a bottle or however much you want). Add parmesan cheese to top it off. Add salt & pepper to taste

I always make a lot of pasta cuz if I didn't all the veggies would overwhelm it! lol ... And I like to have a lot of leftovers.
