  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have always found Spurgeon fascinating. It was not until recently that I realized he was a Calvinist. Funny, too, because he is one of the models of teaching in an Independent Fundamental Baptist College near me. They are not Calvinist, but they follow teachings of Spurgeon. Nor are they Arminianist. Anyway! I did not even know what a Calvinist was until recently either, I probably still do not understand it completely.

Question:

-What types of churches in the U.S. would closely follow the same teachings / beliefs as Spurgeon's?

God Bless!

There are many Calvinistic Baptists today including many of the regular posters on SR. Christianity Today recently had a cover story about the growth of Calvinistic Baptists titled "Young, Restless, Reformed." Some SBC churches are calvinistic, there's also various "Reformed Baptist" churches around, and some "non-denom" churches are both credobaptistic and calvinistic.

The two main Baptist seminaries in Canada are five-point Calvinists, as are most pastors in the largest evangelical baptist group, The Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist CHurches in Canada.

In the USA, you have a great hodge-podge, stemming from the turn of the last century when most baptists followed to notion that election was based on God foreknowing who would accept Christ. This is gradually waning as candidates for ministry are better trained in seminaries.

I would probably choose a Reformed Baptist Church if I were in the USA.

Cheers,

Jim

I'm not sure Spurgeon would be thrilled with the idea of anyone "following his teachings" to be honest. He just preached the Word as he understood it. I don't think he was ever taught other pastors, or anything like that.....

Our church is a 'community' church, non-denominational and Calvinistic. I guess you could say our beliefs line up closely with Spurgeon, although our pastor rarely quotes from Spurgeon. Actually, he rarely quotes anyone, preferring to stick to scripture, but when he does quote, it's Spurgeon, Calvin, Luther, Edwards, Pink etc.

Really, any Calvinistic non-denominational, baptist, or reformed baptist church would line up with Spurgeon's views.

And praise God for that, Jim! :)

Spurgeon had a Pastors college in London and his book "Lectures To My Students" are from his lectures there. It is an outstanding read and profitable to any who are called to the ministry. I would venture to say it is a must read for them.

I have heard of this, but my library does not carry it. I'll have to check the bookstores!

My copy is a hardback that was published by the Old-Time gospel Hour in Lynchburg, Va. You may be able to get it from Liberty University or through them.

Spurgeon was wonderful - he regularly had thousands in his congregation.

Definitely you'd hear of him in a Reformed Baptist church (my church has a "Spurgeon" fellowship hour after our Sunday evening service). Many Southern Baptists are Reformed/Calvinist in their doctrine (Al Mohler & Mark Dever come quickly to mind). The gentlemen on the White Horse Inn quote Spurgeon on a fairly regular basis. Ken Jones is SBC, Michael Horton & Kim Riddlebarger are in the United Reformed Churches denomination. Just about any truly reformed person worth their salt would recognize Spurgeon's contribution.

Good Day,

What I have found being in a Fundy Ind. Baptist church is that the most they have read of Spurgeon is what they find in the Sword of the lord. The editor seem to publish much of his work and I am told it is very much edited of all parts that would be considered "calvinistic".

Most of what is supposed to be from Spurgeon when my pastor quotes him, really is not. Instead some unhistorical rendention of what he did or said.

Here is a good example..

Spurgeon smoked cigars and really ejoyed them, But one day some one used his face on a billboard to promote his favorite brand of cigars, do to that he quit...

Big fat fabrication.

There are many stories like that, which are basless and are oft repeated with out being looked into.

Shows a great disrespect for the man and his writings IMHO.

Peace to u,

Bill
