I'm nine chapters into a fantasy novel and so far my main character is flatter than a piece of toast sliced in half. She's just...boring. My secondary characters are great. Each one is a joy to write. Dela is just bland. She has no depth and when I try giving her backstory, I find nothing there. How can I perk up my character and give her that depth without having to rewrite or trash literally everything I've already written?

(Granted, revision will be necessary if I'm changing something about her; plus I actually enjoy editing so no problems with that. And I don't mind having to rewrite.)

Any suggestions? I love ideas so anything would be helpful.

Cut her and stick one of the better characters in her shoes.

I've found that when a character or a plot thread or a setting falls flat, it's usually because the author doesn't really want to be writing about that character, event, or place. Write about who you want to write about.
