Our cathedral, my home parrish, has a store. *pause*
It's a dangerous store. *pause*

Anyhow, when I last went into the store, very deliberately this time, because I needed to buy rosary rings for my students to use at school. ((I'm sneaking the rosary in, wether it's in the lesson plan or not!))
Of course while I was waiting in line, I browsed through the articles there and found this very nice medal of the blessed virgin praying for less than five dollars. Resistance was futile.

In some of the other baskets, there are rosaries, and decade rosaries, etc. My eye fell on a decade rosary (I thought), which was pretty and feminine with tiny pink hearts for beads and since I had given away one of my chaplet rosaries recently, I wanted another. ((It's always good to have a spare rosary that you can give out to someone.))
I was hesitating a bit, then saw that this one had a clutch as for a bracelet. I didn't have a rosary bracelet yet, and it pulled me over the edge and I bought it.
When I came home the first thing I noticed was that it wouldn't fit: it slides of my wrist and over my hand. Second thing I noticed is that it isn't a decade rosary. It has twelve beads equally spaced out, and a crucifix at the end. Does anyone have any idea what I've bought? Is it a chaplet? (and if so, which one, so I can pray it?) Is it a mismade decade rosary? A bracelet that's too big? Anyone has any ideas?

It's a chaplet. It didn't come in a package that tells you which one? There are many different ones. Have to look it up, but I see that I won't be able to right now (the clock just rang telling me that I have to get ready). Have to leave for an appointment. Darn!

I've looked into a lot of chaplets online, but can't find one with twelve beads equally spaced, nor one with hardshaped beads.
And unfortunately none of the rosaries or chaplets there have any instruction that tells about it in the cathedral store. They come in tiny clear plastic ziplock backs, with not even a name on it. I keep considdering printing a bunch of cards on how to pray the rosary in five different languages and leave them there.

OKay this is what I found out from a web site.
Chaplet of the Holy Infant Jesus

"The More You Honor Me The More I Will Bless You"

This chaplet consists of a medal of the Infant Jesus [of Prague], three beads in honor of the Holy Family, and twelve beads in memory of the twelve years of the Sacred Infancy of our Divine Savior.

On the medal the following invocation is said:
"Divine Infant Jesus, I adore Thy Cross and I accept all the cross Thou wilt be pleased to send me. Adorable Trinity, I offer Thee for the glory of Thy Holy Name of God, all the adorations of the Sacred Heart of the Holy Infant Jesus."

On the first three beads:
Pray the Our Father three times in honor of the Holy Family,
preceded by the aspiration:
"And the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us."

On the twelve beads:
Pray twelve Hail Mary twelve times in honor of the twelve years of Our Lord's Childhood,
preceded by the aspiration:
"And the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us."

On completing the chaplet say:
"Holy Infant Jesus, bless and protect us."

This devotion owes its origin to the zeal of Sister Marguerite, a Carmelite religious, who died in France in 1648. She was distinguished for her devotion to the Holy Child Jesus. The Divine Infant revealed to His faithful servant how pleasing to Him is this holy practice; He promised her that He would grant special graces, above all purity of heart and innocence, to all who carried the chaplet on their person and recited it in honor of the mysteries of His holy infancy. As a sign of His approval, He showed her these chaplets shining with a supernatural light.

Ooooooooooh this is soooo interesting! I wasn't even aware of there being different kinds of rosaries! Especially pink heart-shaped ones! (I was confirmed into the faith in July this year, so am still learning). Giving rosary gifts, Faerieeva, is such a clever way of bringing prayer and Mother Mary into the lives of the kids you teach. (I presume they're kids). My husband started our walk into Catholicism by purchasing a rosary to hang on our car's rearview mirror. Gradually, it (and Mary no doubt!) made us more and more curious about what people do with it, and why. And so we started our walk into the One True Faith...
A bit of aimless chatter for your there. ;-)

Have a lovely day! Good luck with your search!

Sacha

Back again. Yes, lionroar0 is right. I do believe it is the chaplet to the Infant of Prague. It can be made with varies kinds of beads. I have one that is made of dark green round-cut beads. Usually the medal will tell you what the chaplet is. (My St. Anne's chaplet is of green hearts, but it too has a St. Anne medal.)

As to various kinds of beads in a rosary, there is one (I think you can even buy it over the internet and it comes in the single decade as well as the five decade) that I think you'll LOVE. The Hail Mary beads are shaped like light blue teardrops with little unborn babies inside of them, while the Our Father beads are shaped like droplets of blood in the shape of a cross. This rosary is then is used to pray against abortion and the promise from Our Lady to Maureen Sweeney-Kyle is that each Hail Mary prayed on it will rescue one of the innocent lives from death by abortion.

Oooooooooooooohhh this is turning out to be a TREASURE CHEST of a thread for me  This little rosary sounds so beautifull, I simply MUST HAVE IT! hmmmmmm will find it on the internet like you say. It sounds too pretty for words! Oh how blessed am I to have been enlightened to the Truth and riches of the Holy Catholic Church! It's just like our Good Father to provide all these delightful little thingies to help our prayer times. I can't believe that I survived as a Protestant for so many years without starving to death (spiritually)!

Thanks for the help!

There are so many different kinds of chaplets and rosaries. They can be made of anything from glow in the dark plastic to sterling silver and Swarovski crystals. I've seen them in wood, and I've made knotted cord ones, as well as various others.

It's only a rosary if it's used to pray the Marian Psalter, otherwise it's a chaplet!

I could go on and on about the history of the rosary and other prayer beads...

Thank you for replying, but I'm still not sure if it's 'my' chaplet rosary, since mine does not have a medal (only a crucifix on one end). Also, the chaplet of the infant Jesus of prague, speaks of '3 beads', then a medal, then 12 beads. This one is one straight line of 12 beads, with no medal.

And Sacha, I can truely understand your enthousiasm: rosaries and chaplets are great spiritual aides in prayer. I love them because they help me focus on my prayer.

You sure you want to hear about the rosary from a Protestant? ^_^

Actually, once I finish writing my book on prayer, I'm considering writing a Protestant Introduction to the Rosary so that maybe others can find the peace and beauty that I've found in the rosary.

I could only find one thing for a 12 bead chaplet:

http://prayers.viarosa.com/GateofHeavenChaplet.html

It's the Gate of Heaven Chaplet and is a reflection on Revelation 22. Other than that I haven't been able to find anything. However chaplets are often divised to correspond to certain Saints and the number and configuration often depends on specific events or dates in the lives of that particular Saint.

I also have this rosary but I'm not sure you can get it on the internet. I found this information to contact.

You can get more information at this site.... www.holylove.org. There is a picture of the Rosary for the Unborn there which links to this information.

Hmmm... Straight line? Is it in a ladder-like? St. Theresa's Sacrifice Beads? (As a child she'd use a string of beads to count her sacrifices and acts of love done for God each day). But those are normally only ten beads in a string. However, if they ARE ladder-like and have a connection followed by one bead followed by a short chain followed by ten ladder-like connected beads followed by another short chain followed by another bead, a ring, and a cross, then it could very well be a Ladder Rosary Bracelet (one of the ladies that often make rosaries in the Rosarymaker group I attend will sometimes NOT add the Miraculous Medal often attached onto other Rosary bracelets.)
