As I mentioned on another thread, I'm particularly fond of ancient hymns, particularly chant. It doesn't get anymore "classic" than that. There are hymns in use in the Orthodox Church that are over 1,000 years old. Anybody else love this beautiful, ancient art form? I'm particularly fond of Greek, Arabic & Russian Christian chant.

I like Slovonic chant in Byzantine tones with an eison.

I have a few CDs of this type at home, but I can't remember the name of them right off the top of my head. I will look them up and post them next time at a computer.

I have a few CDs of chant in English using Russian tones with a Byzantine style ison.

Thanks for the link. I've had some good luck recently finding some great Arabic CDs. There's a gentleman in Canada, Mr. Georges Karam that imports Orthodox CDs made in Lebanon, Syria and the Antiochian Patriarchate and makes them available via his site, Alexia Publications.

He is extremely personable and helpful and a great enthusiast of Arabic chant.

No, I've never ordered anything from the site, although people have recommended it to me. I'm really into what's available from the Russian site I posted above, so I'm getting most of my CDs from them right now. Even with shipping charges from Russia, a CD only costs about $12.00! Most of the recordings are by monastics or synodal choirs. Amazing stuff.

I've always been into Gregorian chant.....one work I would recommend looking into if you haven't heard it before is Allegri's "Miserere". It is a gorgeous piece about 7 minutes long, but it doesn't resolve until the last measure of it. It is so soothing!

My fav on the CD is the O Euchai.

Latin is such a beautiful language.

I'm completely new here. But I'm amazed at the depth of this discussion board. Very cool!

I adore chant... it's one of the things I look forward to most in Lent and Holy Week, as I have always been stunned at the simple beauty of the ancient music used in the liturgy around this season. And the Exsultet on Easter Vigil still sends shivers down my spine.

CeliaRose -- I often meditate to Anonymous 4's recording of Hildegard von Bingen's works. Amazing stuff -- my music history might be a little rusty, but she seems so far ahead of her contemporaries in her music writing.

White_Socks -- I've actually been to that store in Ottawa, isn't it across the street from a seminary? When we visited Ottawa we found out about it in a guidebook and I found it to be a fascinating place. As I don't yet own any Russian or Arabic chant CDs, I think I'll have to give them a call. ohh yeeeah.

If you click on the speaker icon above, you will hear a Rejoice, O Virgin (Rachmaninov) transcribed for string quartet. Although Orthodox hymns are sung without any instruments in our liturgies, I couldnt resist putting it in this format.
