  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

There will always be moments when you run across the argument that the Bible was meant more for people during 'that time' and since we have evolved and become more Enlightened that many things don't apply in today's 'Modern' world.

But we have to remember and explain about the 'time period' and place that the NT was written. Rome at the time was much more...um...debauched than our modern times. They had infanticide back then and sexual craziness going on, not to mention Christians were jeered at as idiots more roughly than they are now. It wasn't new. MTV and Hollywood are not racy and innovative, it's a pale imitation of the perverseness that went on back then. The sexual revolution of the 60's and 70's aren't a new thing either, just an imitation.

The writers (and the Divine Inspiration given them) of the Bible knew more about the 'modern world' than people want to give credit for.

Great point. Although knowing the audience the books of the Bible were directly intended for can help us understand them better, we must also realise that since they are inspired by God, they are really for all men of all times and places, so we can't dismiss them as inapplicable to our lives today.

Rome was worse?

Infanticide versus today abortions? partial birth abortions? We have probably killed more babies then any of these times. How many average joe roman citizens practiced abortion in the numbers that we do today?

It all comes not to rationalization, the abilty to justified a wrong as a right.

The truths of the Bible are timeless even though the the times are different.

So true, but it's the 'modernisation' of the Bible that I have the most difficulty with. When 'it's not relevant' becomes 'let me write that in a way that you'll understand' so much of the meaning and gravity goes out the window.

I didn't say that there were more abortions at that time than now. I suppose that I didn't articulate the meaning of my post as well as I thought I had. I apologize.
