• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I often ask various questions of Atheists that I wouldn't bother asking of a Muslim and visa versa. Is that a sin or something?

I was just confused, as it wasn't making sense. Why, in a thread where members are talking about their own changes in beliefs, would someone use another member's individual post about their own change of beliefs, as a springboard for their own remarks. It didn't make sense, so I ASKED for clarification. Is that a sin or something?

You're getting into deep eschatology here.

I'm under the impression we are given new bodies, and some of our former memories will pass away.

I'm not sure.

Eschatology isn't one of my strong points -- creationism is.

Huh, fair enough I guess. I am into biology related fields, but the extent of my physics is mostly restricted to when it relates to chemistry.

New bodies? Sure, why not, although it would bother me if that body didn't appear as I was in life; it would be bad enough as it is to try to find people I knew without them having a different physical appearance on top of it.

My memories are what make me who I am; that is why I would seriously contemplate suicide if I was diagnosed with a disease such as Alzeheimer's. Conditions like that rob you of your mental and physical capacities; they rob you of what makes you who you are as a unique individual, and then they kill you. Most people diagnosed with these conditions die within 5, perhaps 10 years the tough ones, and plenty die sooner, so it wouldn't be as though I was robbing myself of any productive years. I know a great deal of how those diseases work, and let me tell you, anyone diagnosed with it shouldn't be expected to be cures. Likely when cures are developed they will be preventatives, not treatments for an established disease.

Why? By your logic, she actually had no choice in the matter.

ISEEWHATYOUDIDTHERE!

She is still responsible for the thread derail if my statement holds, just in the way a hurricane is responsible for massive damage to coast, not in the metaphysical or personal sense.

Nice try though.

Hahahaha, I don't mind, I am often the source of threads derailing. But I didn't throw it this off topic.

So basically you haven't got the faintest idea what a soul/spirit might be, how you might distinguish it from your imagination, or even what part of you is supposed to survive your death. All you have are some bible quotes which sound all nice and significant but are in fact completely useless and evidently as uninformative to you as they are to everyone else. (Looks like those ancient world scribblers were just making it up as they went along again). Still, I guess they didn't know that consciousness was one of the functions of the brain. Not much of you left without that organ - just a big fat nothing - but good luck anyway.

So basically you haven't got the faintest idea what a soul/spirit might be,
... You guys are a riot!
... how you might distinguish it from your imagination, or even what part of you is supposed to survive your death.
As I have always said here:

You guys pester us to death until we dare say, "I don't know," then you guys really go to town.

I told a new convert the other day (ex atheist and loves to debate) that unbelievers will try anything to get you to say, "I don't know," so they can claim victory.

They'll take basic doctrine, like Original Sin or Jesus' Deity, and ask 30 questions if they have to, to get you to say, "I don't know" one time.

Then they'll retrofit that back through the chain of questions to make the [false] point that you really don't know anything.

I just recently found out that that is called "spreading."

It's really a form of tag-teaming, where one person asks a good question, then others join in to demand explanations of every jot and tittle, until they hear those magic words: "I don't know."

Thanks for the QED.

Not knowing what a soul is might be amusing for us, but for you....less so.
As I have always said here:

Not having the faintest idea what the soul might be is rather serious for you considering it's the bit of you that you are hoping will survive your death - a vain hope, admittedly, but one that you have staked rather a lot on. Consequently, being unable to say it's a real thing and not just something that's been made up would seem to be rather important for you.
I told a new convert the other day (ex atheist and loves to debate) that unbelievers will try anything to get you to say, "I don't know," so they can claim victory.
It's not a victory for me, I already know that the soul is a made-up concept. It is you who have banked so much on some imaginary part of you surviving your death.

They'll take basic doctrine, like Original Sin or Jesus' Deity, and ask 30 questions if they have to, to get you to say, "I don't know," one time.
That's because it's so easy to do. Stuff people have made up is usually riddled with holes.
Then they'll retrofit that back through the chain of questions to make the [false] point that you really don't know anything.
If you can't distinguish your soul/spirit/whatever from a figment of your imagination then it rather pulls the rug from under the rest of what you think you know.

I just recently found out that that is called "spreading."
I'd call it pointing out a problem for you.

It's really a form of tag-teaming, where one person asks a good question, then others join in to demand explanations of ever jot and tittle, until they hear those magic words: "I don't know."
I'm seeing an awful lot bluster and excuses and blaming it on everyone else, but I'm not seeing you getting any close to solving your rather significant problem.

Thanks for the QED
Your "I don't know" answer isn't my problem, it's yours.

Dr. Rational again, with only brain summaries of things you have no experience of.

Although it is in your midst you have zero awareness of the Spiritual Dynamics going on. You are in a clear dilemma in life and don't know it, Dr. Intelligent. Your wisdom has become worthless. You have the wrong wisdom (James 3:15).

Back to square one or continue down your Dr. Arrived path?
