  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Change? Orthodox humor.

Father Eugene of the OCA just published his latest translations in which he concluded the Troparion of the Holy Cross for September 14 as:

"Grant victories to our true believing Emperor Nicholas Alexandrovich"

Irene of Orthodox Psalm notes appropriately posted:

Gee Max.....in which People's Republic do you live? :)

I'm amused when I go to certain parishes in my area (The People's Free Republic of Maryland) and they STILL pray for the Emperor and/or the King! I mean....I know it takes awhile to produce "change" in the Orthodox Church, but come on people! :)

I thought you might enjoy this.

I was somewhat offended by the posts in this thread, and I was especially thrown by the ignorance of Peter's ,,joke". The Orthodox Church has been a forerunner in the incorporation and explanation of sciences and their relevance to the True Faith. Perhaps you mean how many Catholics, since they managed to cling voraciously for several centuries to an ancient Greek theory which claimed the earth was the center of the Universe. Tell that joke to the astrophysicist Bishop Alexander of South America, I'm sure he'd find it very amusing.

Speaking of change, Photini, there used to be a time when you could have been anathemaed for what you posted there. The Orthodox Church doesn't follow that so strictly anymore, so I guess you can just poke fun and be sarcastic all you want now.

And I don't know about the OCA, but the RUSSIAN Orthodox Church (both in Russia and in exile) has come to terms, and no longer commemorates the Emperor in prayer, since he is now a SAINT, and does not need earthly victories. Whatever old book was being translated, or for whatever purpose, you shouldn't be reciting that prayer, since Our Truly-Believing Emperor is now our Saint New-Martyr. In the common prayer Save, Oh Lord, Thy People, the phrase commemorating the Emperor has been replaced with ,,grant victories unto Orthodox Christians". Judgment of others, especially the Church, is always fun, but let's try to know what we're talking about first, alright? Thanks.

Welcome to CF CZR.

I take it you are not a fan of The Onion Dome. I think it is safe to say that all of the Orthodox here (from what I have seen) hold the Church in high regard. Perhaps you should hang around a bit before you judge us so harshly because we are not Most True Orthodox Traditionalists.

I am not poking fun. But thank you for the chastisement.

A newbie Orthodox Christian asked,

By the way --what's a 5 pounder?

Volkert responded:
80 ounces.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

P.S. If you're interested in Byzantine Chant, visit Orthodox Psalm Notes at

http://www.orthodoxpsalm.org

p.s.

A 5 pounder is another term for the Big Red Book used at Antiochian parishes by the chanter and clergy.
