  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sure!

I have attended religious ceremonies throughout the South West and New York where the Native Christians inter-mixed their heritage ways with Christian ways.

Sometimes it was pretty scarry, other times it was some of the most memorable times of my Christian life.

It really comes down to if the local pastor believes in whether the mixing of religious sects is acceptable or not.

In what way was it scarry?? Is because you not understand what was happening??
I use my heritage daily in Christain worship. Yes many outside people do not understand how can mix both and still serve God.

In which ways was it scary?

Well, as we well know, spiritual power is beheld on, and by, both sides of the spiritual realms.

I have seen, and at times (pre-salvation) partaken of even events I'd rather not of. We must never forget that Lucifer and his puppets have power when and where we allow them too.

In my reading, I have been seeing that God has given a measure of truth to all cultures which have at times been covered by other traditions....but that those things given by God are a valuable expression of faith when recognized from the original source. However, as AbelaJohnB says....there is a supernatural power on both sides and care should be taken to make sure of the source, eh? But I believe there is a reviving of the truth that God has given to many cultures and when brought into the open as believers, it can be used to enhance your faith and also to bring others to salvation in Jesus.
In my humble opinion. :)

Out of random curiosity from a non Native American (though I've always thought NA's to be very beautiful with their love of nature and spirituality), what kind of rituals do you do which also are Christian? Like specific examples :)

I would be interested in hearing details on Christian Native American ceremonies also. I think we need to appreciate and understand different cultural expressions of our faith.
For a deeper understanding than I could provide, I highly recommend a book titled, The Pipe and Christ: A Christian-Sioux Dialogue by William Stolzman, SJ, Tipi Press, Chamberlain, SD, 1991. ISBN: 1877976008

"This book is the result of a six-year dialogue between Sioux medicine men and Christian missionaries on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Fr. Stolzman presents a clear and learned comparison between Native American religion and Christianity."

Hi all! This post is really important to me. I am a Cherokee who was not raised as one. I am a Believer, but I would also like to know how I can learn and practice being a Cherokee without absorbing Heretical teachings. I was at a powwow in the area, and there are Cherokees willing to teach me. However, there were some things I was leary of. Can anyone guide me to know how to walk that line? Christ MUST come first, but I feel that I need to come back to my heritage too.

I am of mixed blood Cherokee and Choctaw. I have been fortunate enough to be in contact with others who have encouraged and supported me to embrace my heritage and ancestry. But I have also come up against extreme opposition from other 'white' Christians who have harshly informed me that I could not be a 'true' Christian if I were to do so. If you would like to talk, please feel free to send me a PM. My blog may interest you and I also have a club that may interest you as well.
