  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This thread is about the Protovangelium of James (Protovangelium = Gospel of the Begining). It is a text (very used in the early church also read in services) that is like a novel about the borning of Mary and of Jesus.
I advice you to read it, it is really like a novel (http://www.gospels.net/translations/infancyjamestranslation.html)
This text was written on about 150 ad, so very shortly after other NT books.
When later the Church defined the canon of the NT, this book was left out. So it is NOT a doctrinal book for RCC.
This text tell the story of Mary in many details, and affirm the virginity of Mary.
There is NO Catholic position on it.

Remember that highlight the verginity of Mary is a way for highlight that Jesus is God.

I agree that the Messiah was to be born of a virgin and it was to be a sign to us. However, the claim that the perpetual virginity of Mary is equally a sign, that is what I do not understand. Is the perpetual virginity of Mary a tradition or is it a necessity for the Messiahship of Christ? If it were to be proven that Mary's virginity were NOT perpetual, and I am not saying that it is or it isn't, but would this negate the Messiahship of Christ?

That seems to be the current controversy.

In my opinion this could not negate the Messiahship of Christ.

It is a fact that RCC, EOCs, OOCs have always thought to the virginity of Mary as perpetual. In the oldest liturgies she is told 'Aeiparthenos' a greek word for "without childbirth", and probably there is some defiition about that in some council (perhaps Council of Costantinopolis, VII century)
They have always teached that Mary was sinless, but to have other sons is not a sin.

Thank You. I really appreciate that. As long as the perpetual part is not the sign, we are good.
