Catholicism vs. Christianity (???)

I'm constantly confused when people make the distinction between "Catholicism" and "Christianity."

Catholicism is a denomination within Christianity. In other words, they're Christians.

Why do people say this when they mean to say Protestant?

I post this here because I most often hear it at school. As much as I try to explain this to people, they don't get it.

There are some groups of Protestant Christians that genuinely consider Catholics to not be Christians. However, in the majority of cases, I think it's just due to confusion.

Perhaps they could be comparing RCC to the rest of Christendom (Protestant, Orthodox, Messianic). Though it usually is due to an anti catholic bias.
