  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So...my dad's catholic. I call myself Catholic..i havnt been to church as much as i should, and i dont think that i have gone through confirmation or whatever (do i NEED to? i mean, does a piece of paper need to tell me what i believe?).. i did do that whole bread/whine thing though, and I was baptized.

again, i think im a catholic, i believe everything they do...minus that evolution isnt real...i think it is, and other things. but other than that, I am...arnt i?

Patdoggy,

Welcome to OBOB. Confirmation is a sacrament, not merely a piece of paper telling one what one believes. In fact, there is no mention whatsoever like anything described above appearing on a certificate of confirmation. Also, referring to reception of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist as doing "that whole bread/wine thing" is pretty disrespectul. Please choose your words more carefully in the future when referring to the Blessed Sacrament here in OBOB.

It's my understanding that you don't have to believe evolution is false according to Catholic doctrine.

Patdoggy,

Sure, you are Catholic, if that is what you are looking for is permission to call yourself Catholic. Catholicism doesn't end with the Sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation, first Eucharist)it is a life long journey. Catholics become closer to God as they walk that journey through their life.

You could learn much more, and also recieve the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the sacrament of Confirmation through RCIA. RCIA starts in the fall, so I would suggest some learning on your own, as well as going to Mass and to Confession.

I pray that you will find a home in Christ's Church, as the rest of us at OBOB have. If you have any questions feel free to post them, or if there is anything that you don't want to post you can PM me. I would love to help, and so would those at OBOB,

God Bless You,

Therese

What is really at the root of this thread, Patdoggy? Do you feel the Lord calling you to serve Him or is something else eating at you? I sense a lot of uncertainty, lack of focus.

Ask God what He wants of you. Pray hard, pray always. If you do that, you're on your way to living out the Faith as a Christian of the Catholic Church.

Well obviously, if you are going to believe in evolution, you have to reject Darwin's theory of a godless universe.

Well there are a lot of holes in Darwin's theory of evolution. The modern understanding of it is actually quite different from Darwin's, so it's really not even his theory anymore. Obviously I reject the idea of a Godless universe though :) I see evolution and I think....wow...God is just amazing. I fail to see how anyone can look at the evolutionary process and think it just happened by accident. Clearly there is an amazing mind behind it.

Yes you are Catholic. I was like you for the majority of my teen years. My parents were Catolic, but we rarely went to Church and I questioned a lot of the Church's teachings ( although I have always believed in the True Presence) and like you I wasn't confirmed and didn't feel the need to be. When I went off to college at 18 I met a man and fell in love, he was Catholic and invitedme to go to church with him, I did and continued to do so. At first it was for the wrong reasons (I wanted to spend time with him) and it grew into something so much more than that. 2 years after that I made to decision to reclaim my faith. I talked with my priest and went through RCIA classes (boy did I learn a lot) and was confirmed on Easter Vigil with my soon to be husband as my sponser. It was amazing. There were some teaching that I still struggled with and over the course of the last 8 years have worked through them to again a better appreciation of my faith and a better desire to love, honor, and serve my Lord. I would encourage you topray about things, to talk with a priest about your thoughts and feelings, and even to go to RCIA to really learn about your faith. You won't be sorry that you did it.

I knew that someone could explain this better than I did.;) Thank You.
