  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Protestant versions (besides missing several books) can translate certain verses in a way to eliminate Catholic doctrine. Sometimes the words "works" or "tradition" are only used in a negative sense, with another word substituted when we're told these are good things.
I guess you mean passages like this:

Eph 2:9-10 (Douay Rheims): Not of works, that no man may glory. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them.

Eph 2:9-10 (King James): Not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Eph 2:9-10 (English Standard Version): not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Eph 2:9-10 (Wycliffe New Testament) not of works, that no man have glory. For we be the making of him, made of nought in Christ Jesus, in good works, which God hath ordained, that we go in those works {that God made ready before, that in them we go}.

Eph 2:9-10 (New Living Translation): Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
But actually almost no Protestant Bible does what you say -- at least those used by older denominations (there are indeed some "crackpot" translations out there).

And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. (Luke 1:28) (Douay Rheims)

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. (Luke 1:28) (KJV)

And coming in, he said to her, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." (Luke 1:28) (New American Standard Bible)

Gabriel appeared to her and said, "Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! (Luke 1:28) (New Living Translation)

I think these translations speak volumes.

The thing about that verse, is the NAB, the standard translation in the US, says:

Luke 1:28
And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."

Fortunately, the Lectionary has "Hail, full of grace."

There's also Genesis 3:15 - the Catholic translation, until recently, has always had Mary doing the crushing - ipsa conteret caput tuum, "she shall crush thy head". There are some original manuscripts which have "she", and the translation as ipsa has always been approved by the Church.

What version is the Lectionary? Is it a version in of itself?

The US Lectionary is based on the NAB, but with a few minor changes. Certain verses, like "full of grace", are improved, and inclusive language is dropped.

Other changes occur because the readings are excerpts. A passage might begin: "He told them this parable." The Lectionary would have: "Jesus told his disciples this parable."

In the 1962 Missal, and I think the Lectionary continues this for epistles, the Gospel always begins In illo tempore, "At that time". Epistles of Paul begin with Fratres, "brethren", and other epistles begin Carissimi, "beloved".

Wow, this gets deep doesn't it? :o

Not too much...once you do your research and see things for yourself, you'll have a pretty good idea. If you are looking for a good solid Catholic Bible, which will always, in every case clearly show the doctrine of the Church, get yourself a Douay Rheims bible.

And if you want a good commentary, get the two-volume Haydock Commentary. It's the Douay-Rheims Bible with comments from the documents and Councils of the Church and the early Church fathers. It's a bit expensive, but quite good.

I've searched but I can't seem to find one. That website you posted... I think I checked on it last night or some time in the past few days and they don't accept US Currency. Does anyone know of a site where I can check one out and possibly buy one that delivers to the US and accepts US currency?

Here ya go:

http://www.marianland.com/bibledouayrheims/main.htm

Although the site says they only have hardcover. I imagine if you call them, they can give it to you in softcover as well, if you prefer it. I have the softcover one, and like it very much...

Ah thanks! $55 is a little steep but maybe I'll eventually be able to afford it! :)

If you have a credit card, you can use that, and the payment will automatically be converted for you.

Aside from the Douay Rheims, what other Catholic Bibles are there?

In English, there's the New American Bible, the Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition, the Jerusalem Bible (and a New edition), and the Ignatius Bible.

And there's always the Clementine Vulgate, the version I hear at Mass and my favourite.
