Wow... For that to happen in Mexico which has deep Catholic roots is pretty unnerving.

I guess 26 have been killed in the last seven years, however. Very sad...

A lot of priests have been threatened, beaten and killed in Mexico. This is the first this year.

I'm very skeptical of Mexicos (and Latin America in general) practice of the faith, since syncretism seems to run so rampant in different cultures down there. Whether it's the cult of Santa Muerte in Mexico or the practice of SanterĂa in Cuba. I tend not to trust Latin American ideas of what the Catholic faith is or isn't.

I'm not saying there aren't pious orthodox Catholics of hispanic origin, but I think there's a disturbing amount of folk superstition commingled with the faith that has muddied the waters over the centuries. And yes, this can also be said of some European and Asian cultures as well. I just see it the most in Latin American culture, perhaps because they have the highest number of professed Catholics in the world currently.

A lot of it has been cartel-related, since the priests are often outspoken against the morality and criminality of the cartels, the cartels have no compunction about murdering a man of the cloth and incurring the everlasting punishment therein.

Yet there are people who think the cartel is kind of cool and joke about joining...
