  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello Fr Corey (the name Corey makes me think of the tv show Boy Meets World :))

I haven't seen the movie, so not sure who sings that version. Usually movies of that sort opt for older opera singers, perhaps Gigli, Caruso or Bjoerling. I suppose my favorite is Pavarotti from the LA 3 Tenors concert as that is the first time I remember hearing it. Placido Domingo has a nice one with the Vienna Boy's Choir.

Hello Father,

I really like Celine Dion's Ave Maria. I have it on my Palm Pilot and listen to it all the time, here is the mp3:

wow, thanks, she has a big show out here, I should show up dressed in full clerics, or my benedictine habit, and when she gets to the requests part I should stand up and say please sing Ave Maria.

Here's the words to her version, I love it.

Ave maria
Maiden mild!
Oh, listen to a maiden’s prayer
For thou canst hear amid the wild
’tis thou, ’tis thou canst save amid dispair
We slumber safely till the morrow
Though we’ve by man outcast reviled
Oh, maiden, see a maiden’s sorrow
Oh, mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave maria
Ave maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus
Dominus tecum
The murky cavern’s air so heavy
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled
Oh, maiden, hear a maiden pleadin’
Oh, mother, hear a suppliant child
Ave maria
Ave maria

Ave Maria, the version we all know and love, was written by Schubert. The lyrics Fr. Corey posted are the original in English, which are from Sir Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake" poem. Schubert had them translated into German for his song, which is actually entitled "Ellens dritter Gesang" (Ellen's Third song). IMHO, these words work much better with the music than the actual "Ave Maria," and it pains me to hear the latin text put to the music, because it is so awkward, and the meaning is completely different.

If you get a chance to hear it it German, it's worth it. Equally beautiful as in English.

On a strange side note, singer Chris Cornell, from the Seattle grunge band Soundgarden, recorded an english version of the song.
