Jerome (347-420): What is the function of commentators? They expound the statements of someone else; they express in simple language views that have been expressed in an obscure manner; they quote the opinions of many individuals and they say: ‘Some interpret this passage in this sense, others, in another sense’; they attempt to support their own understanding and interpretation with these testimonies in this fashion, so that the prudent reader, after reading the different interpretations and studying which of these many views are to be accepted and which rejected, will judge for himself which is the more correct; and, like the expert banker, will reject the falsely minted coin. I think there are different editors for the different books of the Bible- it is credited to the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarre.

As Met said - the Latin Vulgate and the RSV translation are both included as well as very extensive commentary. It also includes commentary throughout citing Vatican documents, in particular Vatican II. There are also references to applicable Bible verses relating to a particular passage.

The only draw back is the price, I don't know if it is offered in a single edition yet. Maybe I'll go hunt around....

WOW 11 volumes, I found a single volume for 40.00 at Amazon NT only.

I can't afford the Navarre series---wish I could.

I have the Jerome commentary and the New Catholic (Westminster) commentary.

Both good, but even then, they don't sometimes expound on a passage as much as you'd like them to.

I also like the St. Joseph Edition NAB for the notes and commentaries.

I have the JBC and some old Latin commentaries. But I like the Catena Aurea by Aquinas the best. There is a new edition in English available (but for Latinists, his original prose is incomparable). Another very reliable source: "A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture" Orchard & Sutcliff et al.

Did you know that before Aquinas, theology consisted of a course of lectures on the SS, starting w/ Genesis and finishing w/ the Apocalypse? As you can imagine, it was terrible. Students yearned for a comprehensive, cohesive, coherent, integrated and logically arranged presentation of our Scripture-based beliefs.

Aquinas was prevailed upon to undertake this daunting task and gave us the magnificent Summa Theologica.

The Summa Contra Gentiles, which I find superior in some ways, was written as an apologetic tool for dialogue w/ Moslems.

Don't you think Peter Lombard would be a little tweaked to find his famous "Sentences" not accorded as the major medieval systematic work for the study of theology? Especially as Thomas' own commentary on the "Sentences" foreshadowed the his later work in the Summa?

The Sententiae was the first of its type and was used by the Dominicans as well. But it was not adequate for the "comprehensive, cohesive, coherent, integrated and logically arranged" presentation needed.

I really like the New Jerome Biblical Commentary, and the New Jerusalem Bible has great footnotes and indroductory essays.

I bought the Navarre book for Matthew today. It looks awesome! If I had the money I would buy all of them right now.

Pick up the Navarre series one at a time. Set a screen on ebay, they are available from time to time pretty cheap. Or buy them used from Half.com.

This is the best way to study a whole book at time. Pick them up as they come available.
