  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi guys,

Here's a few quick question:  What're some good Catholic bible commentaries?

I know of the New Jerome Biblical Commentary.  Anyone know of any others?

Also, what about concordances (which would include the deuterocanonicals)?

And what's a really good Catholic study bible (again, including the deuterocanonicals). :)

I suddenly have an interest in the deuterocanonicals =)

God bless!

-Jason

A New Catholic Commentary On Holy Scripture; Thomas Nelson Publishers, ISBN 17-12201-02.

The St. Joseph Edition New American Bible has very good notes. There is also the New American Bible Catholic Study Edition which has good notes as well.

Concordances, good luck. I myself favor Protestant concordances, because there are few Catholic ones that amount to much, I'm afraid.....

Hey Wols,

I just stumbled upon a few concordances that include the deuterocanonicals.  Are you aware of these?  By the way, I found them on this page:

God bless!

The Collegeville Bible Commentary series (Liturgical Press). You can either buy the OT and NT compilations or you can buy the commentary (total cost runs around $60) for each book of the Bible individually (each one is about $4-$5 apiece). This is the Bible Commentary series that I use most often.

If you liked the Revelations I sent you from the Navarre Series, they have the rest of the NT, and the first five books of the OT, thus far, too. The Navarre Biblical Commentaries are great, in my opinion.

God Bless,

Neal

Hey Neal,

Do they have an entire commentary of all the books as one reference book?

By the way, that book you sent me is good stuff :)
