  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Over time multiple Catholic areas have been opened up on Christian Forums. There were many reasons for this. With years of experience, trial and, error we have seen that having these multiple areas does not work. They either become sources of strife or fall out of use by the intended users and become areas they were never intended to be. Sometimes the structure of forums made sense when we had more members and need some tweaking later. Because of this the following changes will be made:

1. Salt of The Earth, The Lords Table and The Charismatic Catholic forums will be closed. These forums came about for various reasons and either fell out of use completely, caused moderation problems, or are no longerfrequented by their intended participants.

2. In OBOB the Bookshelf and the Catechism studies sub areas will be closed. When there were dozens of Catholic participants daily in OBOB it made sense to divide the discussions. But now all of the discussions in those two areas can enrich the main area and do not need to be divided.

3. We will work together on an area that is a subforum of OBOB for Catholics who struggle with the teachings of the Church, be that toward Liberal Theology or issues with Vatican II.

The areas will remain visible and read only to preserve the information already there.

Over the years attempts have divided many and multiple Catholic areas have all failed for various reasons. At this point OBOB is the Catholic forum on CF that is for all Catholics who consider themselves in union with Rome, even if they struggle.

Sounds like a prudent decision, thanks David!

I agree with this decision. As Catholics, we need to be adult enough to focus on our faith and concentrate on what we all hold in common rather than the small areas of contention among us.

Where do Catholics stand here who, going with what the Church had taught before, strongly disagree with the Vatican's recent stamp of approval given to Communism and Protestantism?

Just remember to stay on the right side of the respecting the Pope rule. Disagree with his moves but don't paint him as a wolf or imply we are shepherdless...ect or that kind of thing and it will be fine.

What if a Catholic has strong doubts concerning the legitimacy of Francis's claim of being pope due to Francis's breaking away from the teaching of the previous popes?

We will work together to make the struggles subforum. As far as the main part of one bread one body... It's not allowed to question the validity of the Pope.

For now I think we need to focus on what we have in common and getting OBOB vibrant again.

We will have to be more open and tolerant with the closing of these subforums

In some ways. Like Venerable Fulton Sheen said we must be tolerant of people but not of ideas. For instance OBOB will never be tolerant of abortion or relativism.

I hope we can be patient with each other in our struggles will being firm in the truth.

My suggestion for that to happen is to refill the well of Goodwill to each other that used to be a Hallmark of this area.

Amen.

Honesty is priority. I am so glad to see this. The division and seperation was not much different than the division we see in protestantism imo. If some want to argue the virtues of abortion, homosexuality or whatever political ideology, there are other places for that but it should not happen in OBOB.

Catholicism is faith in the Church being absolutely correct on faith and morals. There is no room for disagreement on these things for the Catholic. To argue them is to be anti-Catholic, and to not have absolute faith in the Church.

I have my doubts as to whether this will have the results it is intended to, but as it is clear that these forums (CF generally but especially OBOB) are on a dying trajectory, any type of shakeup could do some good.

Absolutely. But all these divisions were based on things that should not of been an issue in the first place. A lot of us knew this would only add to the bad feelings instead of forced to work these issues out as we should as Catholic Christians. Instead, things went the way of other Churches breaking off of one another and making their own denominations. It's been ironic and eye opening at the same time. I think this decision makes the most sense. I stand behind it 110%.
