  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

When the movie came out, none of the Bishops decided to "ban" the movie.

Many times, over the years, movies have come out, which the Church has told its parishioners to NOT attend.

So, EVEN IF the Bishops "ban" the movie, it does NOT make it a sin to watch it.
God determines what is (and is NOT) a sin.

The same is for a "dirty" movie.
Some couples may watch it, to spice up their Love Life.
Other people may watch it for depravity (arguably, a sin).

It has been classified as "morally offensive" by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB. org) because it is a story based on heretical ideas. Is it a sin to watch this movie? After you have formed your conscience about heresy (NewAdvent. org is a great source of information), maybe you should ask your priest if you have further questions.

Knowingly doing something that may lead you into error is called an occasion of sin. Here's an example:

Let's say you're dedicated to quitting smoking, and one place you're always REALLY tempted to smoke is at the bar. But you go to the bar anyway, and after having a few, you light up.

Now, going to the bar was not a sin in itself, but it put you in a place where you were tempted to sin...and you knew it would! That's an occasion of sin right there.

So if you're all mushy-headed and don't know anything about history, The DaVinci Code might be an occasion of sin for you.

But if you have critical thinking skills, it probably won't be, because it is very, very dumb. Very dumb. Exhibit A: The main character is a "Professor of Symbology." AT HARVARD.

Dumb.

I hope that was helpful :D
