In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone here watched the movie or the TV show?

If you haven't, the premise is basically about two people who have met online. They've generally been talking for quite some time, and things have turned romantic. One of them always wants to meet while the other always puts it off. I've never seen an episode where the person who didn't want to meet is actually who he/she claimed to be.

These people steal photos of other people and pretend to be someone else for months or even YEARS. Then they expect the person that they've been talking to to forgive them and they'll live happily ever after. It's weird. And creepy. And weird.

I don't think I could ever forgive someone for doing something like that. Of course, I don't think I would let myself get that invested in someone without meeting them first either.

Thoughts?

I have not watched it, but now I'm intrigued!
I don't know how I'd feel. It would depend on the extent of the lie and whether or not it felt like the person I had grown attached to was, essentially, a character and not the "real" person.

never heard of it, but it sounds interesting.

I think if I found out that a guy had been lying to me all along and thats why he didn't want to meet, that'd be it. I'd forgive him. But we'd never talk again. I can't even be friends with someone if I don't trust them (whether I meet them online or offline), thats even more true if I'm talking about a potential significant other.

You beat me to this thread! I hardly watch tv anymore, much less anything on MTV (sick) but this show has me hooked.

I would feel so horribly hurt if I were lied to like this. I would be able to move on though. I mean, that's life. But it would make trusting someone even harder the next time around.

It is very scary to think about how easy it is to create this other life on the internet. And how you can't really be sure whom you are talking to and investing time in. You definitely have to be wise going about forming a relationship like that.

The show got me thinking so much that I went and google searched some of my pictures to make sure no one created a profile using my pics. Ack! It creeps me out.

I've seen this show before. Crazy stuff . These situations are one reason why it is a good idea to meet in person before taking the relationship to a romantic level. When a guy I've met online, then talks/text me, but doesn't mention meeting or makes excuses as to why he isn't calling/texting, I usually move on from after about a month or so.

I saw an episode of this show the other day. It is actually really interesting and relevant considering how many couples meet online these days.

And I would go along the same lines of AurburnMeg, I wouldn't be with someone who refused to see me after a certain amount of time.

I've been watching the show lately, but it was really the episode that I watched yesterday that spurred me to create the thread.

That person who had been lying in that episode is from my hometown, and she is a frequent customer where my brother works. He's talked to her a few times and says that she seems completely normal. I just really don't get why people create these entirely new personas.

I'm kind of addicted to that show now. It's just so interesting to see the crazy things that people do.

I saw a really creepy movie based around the same idea. Only the guy accidently talks to a girl on the phone. It starts out as a wrong number call and they keep talking and talking. This goes on for over a year. Then the guy is like i want to meet you. Then when he shows up at the restaurant to meet the girl he is in love with. That girl turns out to be a dude with a girly voice. Very very creepy.

I think the temptation is to great for some people. We all got our flaws and we all sometimes wish we were someone else. Well, the internet and sitting behind a computer, some people take that temptation and actually do create an image online thats not them. Its rather something they hope or want themselves to be.



Some people on the other hand are just pervs and sicko.

A fellow co-worker was just telling me about this show!

What I do not get is why the people that have made up a false identity would go through with meeting their internet buddy...they know they are going to put it on mtv right?

We kinda concluded the show has to be ficticious.

I don't really know why anyone would agree to it. It would think it would be a very embarrassing experience for both parties.

I am generally not a fan of reality TV, but I've really bought into this one. I would imagine that most of the people who write in have seen the documentary and for whatever reason, are okay with the circumstances surrounding the meet-up. I really want to have my brother question that girl about how real the show is. I think that makes me the crazy one though, haha.
