  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Tomorrow I am going to buy a Catechism, finally!
How would you guys suggest that I pursue to study it?

~I am on my journey Home
 Yahoo on the journey! Congratulations! :D

I have only been a convert Catholic for 4.5 months. We bought our CCC when we were in RCIA. I actually tried to study it, but for me it is such a vast pool of knowledge, what I ended up doing was listing questions and then looking them up in the CCC. It really helped me with specifics, especially using the back index to search specific words. It made a lot of things clear.

That is how I did it, referenceing specific questions.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!

Peace in Christ!

That is great, it will be a source of many answers for you.

As far as studying the Catechism, it is up to you. You can do what Kimber did and read through the whole thing. As for myself, whenever I am studying a topic I try to look up the relevant paragraphs in the Catechism.

When you join RCIA, definitely compare what the RCIA instructor says to the Catechism to make sure that they are not feeding you garbage. Most RCIA programs are getting better in this country, but there are still some that teach heretical trash.

The best way to study the Catechism is to find an area you are interested in, and just read all that the Catechism has to say about it. It's not really something that you can read cover to cover, but more of a reference. But that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it. Many questions you have will be answered. Along with the Holy Bible, it is probablly the most important book that you will ever own.

I agree, but since I am turning into Catholciism, I want to learn all about it so I guess the best way is to just read the whole Cathechism and then if I have any questions (after reading it or while reading it) either post them here or look them up around the net or even The Holy Bible.

I suggest reading it from front to back as your method.
If you PM me your email address, I will send you a 2 year reading plan, which I use when teaching the Confirmation classes at my parish. You can speed up or slow down as needed of course, but at least it will give you a topic/paragraph goal to get through each week.

Also, anyone else who wants it can PM me, I don't mind give it out :)

If you want to read the entire thing, that's great! I'm not going to stop you. :)

It's just that it is not the kind of text that a lot of people can read straight through. But if you choose to do so, then good for you. That's terrific.

Hehe, well I spent three years reading The Bible from cover to cover, yeah I have a lot of patience :) And the Cathechism is much shorter than that, and so far I have foudn it is an easy read.

I agree, but the only source that the footnotes refer to that I have is The Holy Bible. And in any case an study of that magnitued(reading al lthe footnotes and all that) is beyong the scope of what I really want to do which is simply to get to know Catholicism. Maybe with the course of time I will little by little read the writtings of the church fathers, the councils, etc.

Actually, I think it is a beautiful exposition of the Faith. And it is so logically arranged. Reading it as you plan to, "front to back", makes a lot of sense because most of what comes later is founded on what comes earlier. Doing it that way really makes it an excellent Catechism.
exactly, its a perfect method of explaining the faith, starting with the first article of the creed "We believe in God", and then building on that with the other articles of faith.
The creed is written the same way, with each article of faith predicated on the last one.

Did you stop reading the bible or do you still read it? I just started reading the bible last year and still can't put it down. What a BOOK!!!! Praise Jesus.

JOB 14:10 But man dies and is laid away; indeed he breathes his last and where is he? 11 As water disappears from the sea, and a river becomes parched and dries up, 12 So man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep. 13 Oh, that You would hide me in the grave, that You would conceal me until Your wrath is past, that You would appoint me a set time, and remember me! 14 If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, till my change comes.
