  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was told, and I think that I even may have read it here, that there is no OFFICIAL ORTHODOX CATECHISM. I also believe I read somewhere that this "catechism" of St. Philaret is not considered to be an official catechism.

Yes? No?

There isn’t an official catechism for Orthodoxy. There are catechism books, but no official catechism like the RCC.

Not official, but that doesn't mean it is bad.

Well, the reason I said this is because I am having a discussion with someone who has pointed to the Catechism of St. Philaret and is acting as if that is the "official" Orthodox belief. The person in discussion is using it to defend the Western idea of ransom theory salvation.

Thanks to Gurney, I will go back and define ransom from an Orthodox perspective.

He's been to Eastern Catholic Churches, and I get the sense that he sees no conflict between Uniatism and Orthodoxy. And he acts as if he knows it all and has barraged me with messages trying to show me that the Roman understanding of salvation is in line with that of Orthodoxy. Quoting Saint Philaret is just one of many cherry-picked quotes he has used to try to keep me from converting and, according to an earlier post he sent, "making a grave mistake."

Oh, well. Gotta love 'em!
