  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i havent really been on in a while, but i felt the urge to get on tonight. there might have been something posted about this, idk. i figured i would come on out and voice.

here is the story:

so about 2 weeks ago, there was a group down in the castro district in san fransisco. this is where a large percentage of the homosexual population resides. there was a group of about 10 people down on a street corner. they were praying and worshipping. it upset some people and it escalated. the night ended with police escorting them to safety from a mob numbering a close to 500. here is a link to watch one of the girls describing the evening.

this next video is footage that was shot as they were being escorted out.

What did they expect would happen? They sit there night after night instigating (yes, instigating) people who don't share the same faith, and they are surprised when they retaliate in mass?

I'm for sharing faith, but not sharing faith with those who want none of it. They can describe it and compare it to things in the Bible all they want, but at the end of the night, all they were doing was causing trouble.

Were these people praying and worshiping by themselves? Or were they actively evangelizing?

yeah, they were by themselves. there was just a really peaceful atmosphere from what i hear. they werent "actively evangelizing" as most people would define it. they were just chilling on the street corner in a small group type setting

I'm all for democracy, but given how annoying public evangelical demonstrations are, I can't blame the Castro population for getting annoyed. It's extremely annoying and a disruption, when one is just trying to get a coffee or run into a store downtown, and someone tries to hand you a "Jesus Loves You!" pamphlet, and tries to start a worship sing-a-long. It must've been ten times worse in this case to be a homosexual who's being lectured to.

And considering they've been described as "Anti-Gay Christians" I don't see how hiding behind a Christian label somehow makes the fact that people rioted against them such a tragedy. It's hate speech - just because you declare you're doing God's Will, going into a safe-area for homosexuals and making a bunch of homophobic remarks isn't classy.

While I can't condone violent rioting, I still think the evangelical groups are equally in the wrong here.

You can't equate what these Christians did with violent rioting.

It's hate speech. They're anti-gay. I don't see how anyone can call these people "Christians."

Furthermore, if you have a problem with homosexuals, great. Avoid them. I don't particularly like annoying evangelicals, so I stay far away and look very interested in my white chocolate mocha when passing by one downtown.

If you find the gay lifestyle disgusting, don't go to Castro Street. Don't watch Milk. Make sure you don't buy Marc Jacobs handbags. But don't lecture an audience who isn't interested.

No. If these people were afraid of homosexuals, they wouldn't be in Castro.

Xenophobia doesn't stop people from say, entering ethnic areas and spewing hate speech.

Why should homophobia stop a bunch of anti-gay, so-called Christians from declaring gays disgusting in a gay district? If anything, the homophobia probably motivated them.

Anyways, they weren't wanted, they're annoying, and hopefully they will now understand that gays, as well as at least one heterosexual, white chocolate mocha obsessed person also find their prescence uneeded, unwarranted, and a distraction when trying to get things done.

It's sad that it came down to violence, and it's not something I can condone. But I think it's understandable why the homosexual community rioted.

Phobia indicates a fear. Most Christians who are accused of being homophobic are not afraid of homosexuals.

Also, these people were not Phelps-style people at all. They weren't going all fire-and-brimstone. And this judging of their motives is nothing short of hypocritical. Furthermore, if this is a response to the gay demonstrations that have been making the news, I'd say the Christians are coming out on top. They didn't attack anybody, let alone an elderly woman. They didn't enter any gay bars or even voice any sort of anger with what they were doing. That speaks to a better motive than fear or hatred or spite. And even if it was motivated by any of those, they sure handled themselves with a lot more class than the folks on the other side of the aisle in spite of such a motive.

SINGING IS SO FAR BEYOND SPEACH. AND JESUS DON'T HATE THE PEOPLE, ITS THE SIN HE CAN'T STAND. WE ARE TO SHARE THE LOVE OF CHRIST AND LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR AS OUR SELF. SO WHAT THE NEXT TIME A BABY CRIES OR A GROUP OF BABIES CRIES ITS OK TO RIOT AND DUMP HOT COFFEE ON THEM BECAUSE ITS ANNOYING? OR THE NEXT TIME A HOMLESS PERSON COMES UP TO US AT THE DOOR AND BEGS FOR MONEY GIVE THEM A SWIFT KICK THEY WERE ANNOYING AND I DON'T AGREE WITH IT ANYWAY SO ITS OK.... (OF COARSE THESE ARE JUST ANALAGIES, I DON'T REALLY MEAN THEM, THEY MAY NOT BE THE BEST OF EXAMPLES BUT I THINK YOU ALL GET MY DRIFT)

um, sweetie pie, they werent handing out tracts. they werent "evangelizing" as most people would define that term. they were on a street corner, yes. BUT they were not up in anyones face or saying anything offensive...they were just minding their own business.

And considering they've been described as "Anti-Gay Christians" I don't see how hiding behind a Christian label somehow makes the fact that people rioted against them such a tragedy. It's hate speech - just because you declare you're doing God's Will, going into a safe-area for homosexuals and making a bunch of homophobic remarks isn't classy.

oh...these people are not "anti-gays." i think that term describes people from around here in the south. they shout angry remarks and wave pistols and shotguns at lgbt (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender for those who dont know) events. that would count as "anti-gay"
*the above was a dramatization and over exaggeration...sorry

as far as you sipping your white mocha latte, go for it babes. the more you drink, the less white chocolate garbage there is for me to deal with. im not really a white chocolate guy. now, im not condoning their behavior, on either side. i promise im not. i am interested in hearing opinions. its cool stuff

also, i dont think that the castro district is a "safe zone." im not really sure what you mean by that. theres places like chinatown in the NYC that has a large population of asians. that doesnt really make it a "safe zone" for the asian population that lives there. all it really means is that, theres a lot of asians that, well...um, live there...

yeah, i dont really remember what all else was said. homophobic people are people that are scared of homosexuals. and actually, the ones i know are also scared of bisexuals and trasgender too. so the name is a generalized thing. i have friends that are homophobic and will leave a restaurant if they think someone in there is gay. its happened before. so theyre not really the people that hand out tracts...those people are just inconsiderate evangelicals that dont really know how to love people as Christ did.

If indeed these Christians were "causing trouble," and escorted away by police at the end of their "demonstration," they're in good company - it happened to Paul and Silas once in Acts 16. I'd like to get the full story here, but it's one thing to get annoyed because of viewpoints you disagree with and another thing to pour coffee on people, pushing them, and threatening to kill them. Tolerance works both ways, folks.
